Zoo Music Awards

When: Sat., March 8, 6 p.m. 2014

You just finished watching Hollywood celebrities wander the red carpet for the Academy Awards, but there’s one more red carpet event to check out. At the Zoo Music Awards, Montana bands and singer-songwriters will get prizes in categories ranging from bluegrass to hip-hop. Bands performed for audiences and judges over the course of two nights at venues all over town during the showcases back on Feb. 7 and 8. Now, three acts from each category are in the running—you can check out them out on the ZMA website. The evening includes performances from Airstream Safari, Muzikata, Traff The Wiz and MIP. (There will be no insane acceptance speeches from Matthew McConaughey.)

The awards night includes performances by aerial artists, who will entertain from terrifying heights. Terrifying for me, anyway. Missoula-based collective Moksha uses hoops and silk and colorful costumes to create a visual feast—in the air. The Moksha collective’s studio offers classes in aerial lyra (hoops), aerial silk and aerial yoga. Aerial art has been on the rise in Missoula, at least anecdotally. During the farmers markets last year, you might have noticed a performer or two bending and twisting upside-down off long pieces of silk hung from the bottom of the Higgins Avenue bridge. It was a lovely and mesmerizing addition to the tables of fruits and vegetables, a glimpse into one other cool art form that Missoula has to offer. #
