Top Hat showdown

Worlds collided at the Top Hat last Tuesday night, leaving a wide margin of interpretation about just how lewdly one lesbian couple acted.

The pair was asked to leave the bar after a public display of affection that patron Troy Dvorak viewed as “just two girls kissing,” and owner Steve Garr saw as “just short of getting out the dildos.”

Dvorak, who says he doesn’t know the women, says he was blacklisted from the bar after a verbal confrontation with Garr over the incident. He says Garr kicked the women out on account of their sexuality.

Garr adamantly disagrees.

“We have a policy where we don’t allow rude or lewd behavior, whether you’re straight or gay,” Garr said. “All I’m trying to do is keep an acceptable place.”

Garr said the women were way out of line, offending his customers, and that Dvorak walked in on the middle of the scene, not knowing what was going on. Garr says he had asked the women repeatedly to stop their mugging. By the time Dvorak arrived at the bar, Garr was removing the women’s table and taking their drinks, prompting Dvorak to have words with him.

During the debate that ensued, Dvorak said that Garr made a biblical reference about same-sex sexuality.

“At that point I knew it wasn’t a public display of affection matter. It was the fact that there were two lesbian women kissing. That’s why they were being removed from the bar,” Dvorak said.

When Garr was asked about the biblical reference, he initially denied it, saying he was agnostic. But when pressed, he admitted saying something along the lines of, if you want to get down to principles, check the Bible.

Garr thinks he may have been set up for a potential discrimination lawsuit. He also said he’d like Dvorak to come back down to the bar so they could “go out back and settle this thing.”

The two women never were identified and left the bar at their own pace, at the end of a set by Tuesday night regulars Pinegrass.
