Tech N9ne

Misery Loves Kompany

Sex sells, but lewd lyrics alone can’t carry a record to legitimacy. Luckily, Kansas City-based rapper Tech N9ne, aka Aaron Dontez Yates, rounds out his many sexual allusions with rambling rapid-fire rhymes and distinctive bass-heavy beats.

“2 Piece” finds Tech N9ne at the top of his game. With hints of reggae and a choice sample of Cream’s “I Feel Free” dubbed in the background, he declares, “Watch me as I rise to the pain/I walk through the flames insane/With lyrical scatter with spit that’ll spatter your brain.” All the elements of the song unite in a strange harmony of blood and splendor—something many rappers fail at.

This Misery is not for the light-hearted, but Tech’s 10th release—a collaborative effort with the likes of Prozak, T Nutty and Big Scoob—offers plenty for fans to chew. Take, for instance, “That Box,” which doesn’t exactly refer to his figurative box of lyrical tricks. It’s a funny take on the female form, if not a bit exploitative, but as with the rest of the album, the MC’s impressive talents prevail.

Tech N9ne and Paul Wall with guest Ill Bill play the Wilma Theatre Monday, March 31, at 8 PM. $26/$28.50 balcony.
