The Bitterroot range's most popular summit, St. Mary's 9,300-foot summit can be reached with just a three mile stroll from the trailhead. Backcountry skiers take advantage of snow lingering on the summit's easily accessible eastern flanks as late as June, and the trail then stays (mostly) snow-free until October. An historic fire lookout- open only in summer- is visible from the valley on clear days.
