At Lisa’s Pasty Pantry you get a whole creamer full of gravy to yourself. That’s because the modest diner’s specialty pasties are huge. If you have gravy left over, you should be ashamed—or at least dump the rest on your fries. If you haven’t had a pasty (not pronounced like the nipple tassels, thank you very much), then you haven’t lived. The Butte-inspired (and thus, Irish-inspired) classic includes beef and potatoes cooked into a thin dough crust. Thin crust is key, and owner Lisa McGrath—Butte native that she is—has it down pat. In addition to world-class pasties, the Pantry, located at 2004 West Sussex Avenue, also offers a smidgen of Butte kitsch: a 1919 Butte phonebook, old cans of Butte Beer and vintage photos of uptown Butte comprise a modest decor. The diner’s nod to history—the pasty was, after all, once a staple for Montana copper miners—adds a little cultural flavor to the meals, but we still haven’t figured out how to get the gravy on that.
