Re: “Alone on the Range

Unfortunately BLM has lied to all of us and you have printed their pronouncements. The range is good, there is no overcrowding, no starvation and Big Horn Sheep will be managed for next. The inequities need to addressed. You should be doing an in depth investigative piece on the the mismanagement of wild horses and burros. Montana had 7 wild horse management areas. The Pryor horses are Montana's last wild horses. How is it that horses no longer roam on their own lands? How untrue that the Pryor herd needed to be reduced or they would harm their range. They did fine for centuries, tucked away and safe from the world that would have killed them off at any time. Now they are protected they don't stand a chance? BLM states that wild horses have no natural enemies yet when left alone the predation by mountain lions, bears and in the past- wolves, has kept these horses within their range with no help from humans. Re: “Alone on the Range

Thank you for doing a better balance on this story. Many of us believe that BLM has broken laws and is guilty of abuse and cruelty through their methods of rounding up horses and also trucking and holding them indefinitely. That BLM has fostered relationships with those who buy the horses for slaughter in Canada or Mexico, over relationships with caring and professional people who want management improved and rough handling and removals stopped. The number of wild horses now in the wild is highly debatable. BLM has been caught juggling numbers over the years. A true census should be carried out and the secrecy over the horses in holding needs to be ended. This needs to be done ASAP and a moratorium to stop roundups put into immediate effect. BLM has been managing wild horses and burros to extinction which means they break the law, manipulate and mislead the public, and all the while dynamic family bands of wild horses take the brunt of this in deadly roundups and members removed to oblivion or adoption. Yesterday I read that thousands have died in holding. We know that thousands more were sold to killer buyers for as little as $10. a head. We want the Burns amendment struck down and all the original intent of the Wild and Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act restored and the land that BLM has pushed and stolen our wild horses and burros from. Using a system that creates the look of overcrowding BLM used their authority to reduce herds and totally remove horses from their legal range. There is a great assumption that because BLM has authority they must be right. Unfortunately for some our most treasured symbols of our Western Heritage, BLM has been wrong. MKW
