Re: “Art and a-holes: When to say no, from Harvey Weinstein to XXXTentacion

There you go, you get your feminism kudo for the day for writing such a good feminist article. Oh wait, you did something in your past that I personally dislike? No kudos for you! Your art's worth is directly related to whether you're PC or not, and you sir have failed my arbitrary test!

Don't get me wrong, I think Young Dagger Dick (something else the rapper called himself, which I find absolutely silly) is a talentless hack who just so happened to figure out that prodding outrage from the morally vacuous and thin-skinned is rather profitable. But dismissing his work because of elements of his character is simply wrong. You said you liked his one song not based on the merits or degeneration of the singer's personality. It was 'sound' - musical qualities that happened to tickle your fancy. That's it. So you can like music for it in itself, but now you try to appease your Feminist taskmasters by shrinking up and rejecting music not based on its sound but rather based on whether the sound-maker offends someone's sensibilities? Come on, you know better than that.

Would you stop charging your phone because Edison, who pioneered Direct Current, used to steal and electrocute peoples' pets to slander Tesla's Alternating Current? Would you reject notions like, 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise' because the speaker Ben Franklin rather enjoyed French hookers while married? Are you going to throw your computer away because the myriad of software and hardware developers have all had varied lives with all manner of disagreeable sentiments and moments in them?

Are you beginning to see the folly of your line of thinking? If you accept this notion that you must judge a piece of art or work based on the personal character and unrelated actions of the maker, then you will have to throw literally everything you enjoy away because everyone is an asshole on some level or another. In Dagger Dick's case he's a massive asshole who hopefully gets to consider his craft behind bars should the allegations against him prove true. But if you like his ode to narcissism because it sounds good to you, then the only thing someone can accuse you of potentially is whether or not your taste in music is good, not that you are suddenly immoral for enjoying someone's work.

Re: “Missoula joins ACLU's suit to block Montana's 'bathroom bill'

Mmm, can't let those pesky plebeians potentially vote for themselves their bathroom preferences. Democracy when its convenient, Totalitarianism when it isn't - anything to advance your founder's mission, eh ACLU?

30. Out of a population in the greater Missoula area of something on the order of 100,000. Hardly a ringing endorsement for Loudon's and his supporters' crackpot paranoia !

This is nothing but mean spirited corporate greed, arrogance and vindictiveness at its worse, and is an excellent argument for public ownership of utilities, and against their private ownership.

"Montanans should know that the Montana Wilderness Association,...think logging is more important than restoring this already over-logged area..."

I was active in MWA in the late '70s into the mid 80s, when I lived in Montana. What has come of that outfit ? When, how, and why did it lose its soul? The Now-gone founders and other old timers, like John Montaigne and Doris Milner, must be weeping in their graves !

Anyone remember when this all started Engen told us the cost of litigation was going to be around $400,000? More lies.

Yes, Charlie J. would be appalled as he was by all infringement of Capitalist industry on the wild. I'm sure a mind as acute as Rick's has long since realized that collaboration with an unprincipled enemy is its own reward.

Re: “Carlyle tries (again) to force release of the city's Mountain Water legal bills

Someone made out like bandits, it just wasn't the people of Missoula.

We paid $140 million to get the same water we were getting 10 years ago, 50 years ago. Lot of money for 'peace of mind' and to 'one-up' a global corporation.

Thankfully our kids will foot that bill, saving us from any headaches. That's very kind of us.

Re: “A new Missoula business offers curbside compost pickup

Wow, this is great! I hope we can see something similar with our non-recycled glass problem.

That said, I do worry. I worry because the City of Missoula recently took over EKO Compost, paying $3 million for this private business.

The city will need to recoup that cost, and a small-time business like Doty's here will not be viewed in a favorable light. After all, isn't he edging into the city's new business? It'll be interesting to hear more about this as time goes on.

Re: “Missoula joins ACLU's suit to block Montana's 'bathroom bill'

Montana had 2,000 kids in foster care last year; 4,000 kids this year.

Shame that Laszloffy and his fellow Bible-thumpers at the 'Family' Foundation can't focus their attention on issues that are actually important to the state.

If you are interested in grizzly bears in the Cabinet-Yaak ecosystem, you may want to check out the following information.

"Lawsuit restores Cabinet-Yaak grizzly endangered status" (August 2017)

http://montanauntamed.com/montana-untamed/…

And "Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals halts East Reservoir Timber Sale" (September 2016)

https://allianceforthewildrockies.org/nint…

[Ironically, the Yaak Valley Forest Council, with the help of timber industry lawyers at the American Forest Resource Council, intervened in this lawsuit in support of the U.S. Forest Service's plan for 8,845 acres of proposed commercial logging, of which 3,458 acres will be new clearcuts, affecting tens of thousands of acres of the Kootenai National Forest and five major tributaries to the Kootenai River and Lake Koocanusa. The commercial logging and clearcuts were planned in habitat for threatened lynx, bull trout, and grizzly bears.]

Calling it one of the worst logging projects in decades, Mike Garrity, Executive Director for the Alliance for the Wild Rockies announced today that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has granted its request for an injunction halting a massive clearcut and logging project affecting tens of thousands of acres of national forest and five major tributaries to the Kootenai River and Lake Koocanusa.

A lawsuit was filed by the Alliance for the Wild Rockies in federal court in May 2015 challenging the U.S. Forest Services decision to authorize a large logging, burning, and road-building project in habitat for threatened lynx, bull trout, and grizzly bears in the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana. Federal District Court Judge Christensen ruled the logging could go forward in July and the Alliance immediately appealed resulting in the injunction today to halt the project based on the Courts finding that the Alliance is likely to succeed on the merits of its appeal.

The East Reservoir Project area is huge, Garrity continued. But there are already over 22,000 acres of clearcuts within its boundaries. Add to that the 8,845 acres of proposed commercial logging, of which 3,458 acres will be new clearcuts, and the additional impacts to this already heavily-logged area are simply unacceptable.

Additionally, the timber sale is a huge money-loser which, by the Forest Services own estimate, will cost taxpayers $2,589,535 to subsidize further degradation of an already-degraded landscape, Garrity explained. Much of that cost will be to rebuild and maintain an astounding 175 miles of logging roads, construct nine miles of new permanent logging roads, allow an additional 13 miles of illegal, user-created roads to be added to the legal road system, and open nine miles of previously closed motorized trails. When all the existing science shows more roads directly lead to more grizzly bear deaths and more sedimentation of bull trout spawning streams this project simply ignored the legal mandate for the Forest Service to maintain existing species of fish and wildlife when conducting timber sales.

That the Forest Service could possibly even consider such a massive logging project in an area in which only one percent of the remaining old growth exists in small, isolated stands defies law and logic, Garrity continued. For old-growth dependent wildlife such as lynx, this project is basically a death sentence to a species that is already in severe decline due to road-building and logging. That the Forest Service allows this timber sale to log federally-designated lynx critical habitat isnt just sloppy work, its inexcusable and illegal.

As most Montanans know, there is incredible political pressure to get out the cut on National Forests, Garrity explained. But the bottom line is that federal laws require retention of functioning ecosystems and maintaining the diverse wildlife and fisheries that rely on healthy forests not just treating our publicly-owned forests as commercial logging lots to benefit a single industrys profit margin. In this instance, the agencies have simply side-stepped those requirements, as well as the Endangered Species Act, by judging their own actions to have no adverse impacts despite the massive scale of this project in bull trout, grizzly bear, and lynx habitat, all of which are threatened species.

Whats astounding is that so-called conservation groups are among those who intervened in the lawsuit to support these massive new clearcuts and were represented by none other than the industrys American Forest Resource Council Garrity said. Montanans should know that the Montana Wilderness Association, the Yaak Valley Forest Council, Lincoln County, The Lands Council, Troy Snowmobile Club, Cabinet Resource Group, F.H. Stoltze Land and Lumber Company, Idaho Forest Group, and the Troy School District all think logging is more important than restoring this already over-logged area and recovering the lynx, grizzly bears, and bull trout as required by the Endangered Species Act.

The Alliance for the Wild Rockies exists as a watchdog organization that concentrates on activities occurring on our National Forests, which are owned by all Americans and exist not simply to supply local timber mills, Garrity concluded. When faced with federal agencies literally exempting themselves from the law with the blessing of collaborator groups, we have no recourse but to challenge those decisions in federal court. That is exactly what we did on the East Reservoir Project to protect our irreplaceable forests and wildlife resources for present and future generations.

Re: “City Council considers a zoning change for the University District

The university district is a beautiful area of Missoula with an architectural history spanning over 100 years. The homes represent the tastes of architects throughout the last century and include everything from Queen Anne, Craftsman, and Revival styles of architecture to today's more modern style. This is what gives the charm of the university. To continue to single out a specific home that meets all current zoning requirements and would meet the proposed zoning requirements, is tiring at best and harassment at worst. This home is handsome and aesthetically pleasing in its surroundings and compliments today's style. Many homes in the university are in fact larger than Timblo home but are no longer a style favored when designing and building a home. Homes in the historic district are kept in their respective style even during remodels, but the Timblo home is not in the historic district. We should actually thank the Timblo's for keeping within the diverse characteristic of the University District and for continuing the trend to pioneer architectural styles of today's time.

Re: “Meet Lisa Triepke, the candidate who wants to unseat John Engen

How did Lisa Triepke receive public support while she purchased two homes valued at nearly a half million dollars? A property search will show that she purchased a home in Missoula for more than $300k and a second home in Gulf Breeze Florida for $150k. Normally politicians wait until after they are elected to behave in this manner. This woman should not be allowed to serve as mayor ever.

When will some Montana Indy filmmakers make a short of GG and his most meaningful exploits? They could cast our own hometown, award winning actor JK in the lead role. He'd be perfect, especially drawing from his character in Whiplash.
