We're No. 240

The University of Montana sent out a press release yesterday boasting it's "No.1 in Montana for campus safety in a recently released ranking of the safest colleges and universities in the U.S. by" That's true, but a little short of the full story.

UM came in ranked No. 240 overall with a rating of 89.82. The only other Treasure State school mentioned in the top 450 is Montana State at No. 292 with an 88.36 safety rating.

The rating scale accounts for severity of a crime as well as frequency of crime, and includes categories like aggravated assault, rape, murder and vehicle theft. UM was done in by the "larceny-theft" category, which showed 9.92 incidents per 1,000 students. For comparison, Mississippi State University at No. 278 had 9.95 per 1,000 students, and Texas A&M at No. 290 had 10.92.

Arkansas State University Beebe topped the list with a perfect 100 safety rating. UC-San Diego came in at No. 450 with a rating of 81.39.
