The real reason today's a big game for many Griz fans

Posted By on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Defending national champion Eastern Washington travels to Washington-Grizzly Stadium today for Montana's first conference match-up of the season and what is being billed as "one of the biggest games" of the year. But for thousands of local fans, the on-the-field stakes take a backseat to a significant off-the-field change: Starting with today's contest, CBS affiliates across the state will finally broadcast Montana's conference games in high-definition.

From the Montana Television Network:

Beginning with the September 17 Big Sky opener against Eastern Washington, MTN will broadcast Montana football games in high definition. The HD format has become a staple of sports broadcasting and Montana will join the ranks of major colleges with HD productions.

"Viewers have been asking for an HD broadcast and we're proud to provide it to them" said Hermes. "This is the sort of quality Montana athletics and Montana viewers deserve and I'm sure fans across the state will enjoy the crisp clear signal high definition provides."

Talk about long-time-coming. Griz fans have been waiting for the upgrade for years and were especially embarrassed after Montana State games started getting the HD treatment on ABC affiliates. Now the Griz and CBS have leveled the playing, er, viewing field.

Today's kickoff is at 1 p.m.
