Blackbird Kid Shop closing

Posted By on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 5:35 PM

The four-time Best of Missoula winner for Best Kids' Clothing announced this afternoon that it's closing by the end of August.

"The economic slump," says co-owner Joanna Smetanka. "We opened at a time when the economy started to sink and we were never really able to overcome that. We tried to adapt to give our customers what they needed — like the used section — but it wasn't enough. We gave it our best."

Blackbird Kid Shop opened on the Hip Strip in 2008 and immediately won over locals with organic and locally made kids clothing, furniture and books. Indy readers voted it Best Kids' Clothing every year since.

Before closing, Blackbird will offer everything in the store at 50% off. Smetanka adds that the store's fixtures, racks and hangers will also be for sale.
