This week's protest: protecting medical marijuana

Posted By on Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 11:51 AM

In the aftermath of Monday's federal raids of medical marijuana providers across the state, Montanans for Responsible Legislation (MRL), Garden Mother Herbs and Zoo Mountain Natural Care have planned a unity march in Missoula for Saturday, March 19, at "high noon." (Their words, not mine.)

The march, titled "Out of the Shadows, Into the Streets," will start at Caras Park and end up at the county courthouse. MRL founder Doug Chyatte and local herbalist Katrina Farnum will address the crowd, calling for officials to respect Montana voters' rights.

From a release:

It has certainly been an acrimonious year for medical cannabis patients and providers — from fire bombings and moratoriums, to Representative Mike Milburn’s repeal effort, many ill Montanans fear returning to the days of midnight raids by ski masked government agents.

“Of course this is a community under attack,” says Chyatte, one of the march’s organizers. “Yet these events will only serve to catalyze and unite all Montana cannabis consumers. This community is fed up — I haven’t met one patient who is willing to go back to looking over their shoulder.”

Saturday's unity march comes after locals burned the midnight oil, so to speak, to protest last week's megaload shipments down Reserve Street.
