Local golf clubhouses need a mulligan

Posted By on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 6:10 PM

The Missoula Police Department released details of its latest alcohol compliance check and found that only two businesses failed: the University of Montana Golf Clubhouse and the Canyon River Golf Clubhouse.

During a previous check, Linda Vista Golf Clubhouse was among five establishments that failed.

That means nearly half of the guilty parties from the last two compliance checks are not downtown bars or blue-collar watering holes, but joints better known among the Callaway crowd as the 19th hole. And you thought Tiger Woods gave golf a bad name.

From today's release from the Missoula Police Department:

Of 22 businesses in Missoula that were checked only two failed. The
failures were at the University of Montana Golf Clubhouse and the Canyon
River Golf Clubhouse.
This is an improvement upon the last check conducted in which five
out of sixteen businesses failed. During the previous checks, El Cazador,
Grizzly Grocery, Nickel Ante Casino, Bridge Pizza and Linda Vista Golf
Clubhouse failed. All of these businesses were re-checked last week and

Canyon River and the University of Montana Golf courses can
expect to be re-checked during the next Alcohol Compliance Check
During Alcohol Compliance Checks, police officers accompany
young adult volunteers who are under the legal age to purchase alcohol to
various establishments. The volunteers are sent into the establishments and
attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages. Business employees who fail to
check I.D. and/or fail to "do the math" and thus proceed with the alcohol
transaction are immediately cited into Municipal Court for serving alcohol
to individuals under 21-years of age.
Businesses whose employees fail Alcohol Compliance Checks are
then reported to the Montana Department of Revenue and the businesses
are subject to progressive fines and, potentially, suspension or revocation
of their liquor license for continued violations.

By the way, you can absolutely count on us dusting off our best plaid pants and hitting these watering holes for future installments of our weekly "Happiest Hour" column.
