Retrospective mania!

Every media outlet in the world — including us — is doing some sort of look back at the decade and/or year, so we thought it'd be appropriate to do a look back at all the Montana-specific look backs. Got that? Prepare to have your head explode with nostalgia.

The Associated Press lists its top 10 Montana stories. (Summary: the Hardin jail fiasco gets top billing.)

The Flathead Beacon looks back at the year in business news (summary: mostly crappy), as well as the year in photos (summary: always cool lighting from Vito).'s David Frey wraps up a "roller-coaster" ride of a decade in the West. (Summary: Lots of booms and busts.)

The Billings Gazette puts its year-end wrap up all on one page. Click on a list of top stories, and see everything they've printed — from swine flu to road construction — in one place. (Summary: A lot of reading here.)

The Missoulian doesn't have a similar feature (at least one that I can find), but has been running a series of year-end articles, like this one on the changing face of Missoula's downtown (summary: people come, people go) and this one on the best local concerts of the decade (summary: too much cool stuff to summarize, from White Stripes and Rolling Stones to David Boone and Bug).

The Daily Inter Lake's Frank Miele calls it a year of new lows. (Summary: "Last year we had a Constitution; this year we don’t.")

We found the Laurel Outlook's year in review strangely compelling. (Summary: Small towns see weird things.)

The Belgrade News ranks the year's biggest events, starting with Obama's August visit and the Bozeman explosion, and ending with "Susan Lang's Story." (Summary: Lang was booted off the school board for embezzling money from a Bozeman intramural wrestling club. Bet you didn't guess that one, did ya?)

The Lake County Leader offers up a week-by-week log of 2009. (Summary: "Oct. 8: Officials investigate a trailer fire ...")

There's more, surely. But that should be enough reminiscing for now.
