Still around

Drag the River keeps the alt-country faith

Here's a curious math equation for you: Take dudes from legendarily snotty pop punk bands, like All, Armchair Martian and The Nobodys, add them together and what do you get? One of the most down-home, sweetly sad-sack alt-country bands of all time. The Fort Collins, Colo. group's main members are Chad Price (from All) and Jon Snodgrass (of Armchair Martian), who share dueling leathery-voiced vocals.

Drag the River's songs alternate between classic country arrangements and tinkly pianos to faster, catchy odes about trashy barroom joys, plus the occasional Misfits cover. It's the kind of music you want to hear when you're hungover, or about to be. "Get Drunk," a jaunty li'l track off Closed, is one of my favorites when I'm giving a dude the boot. "I love to get drunk/ I love the movies / I love my TV, my couch and my VCR / I love the way the sun reflects off the hood of my car / But I don't love you anymore."

Drag the River has been around off and on for about 17 years; the guys will announce they're through, and then start playing reunion shows again. Thus, album titles like Bad at Breaking Up. The band's sound, though, has never strayed from its country-punk faith.

Drag the River plays Monk's Bar Sun., Aug. 18. Doors at 9 PM, show at 10. $5.
