Romney Ridge highpoint, left-center.

The highpoint on Romney Ridge (8,685’) is not visited by many climbers. Although with a summit only 5 feet lower than Downing Mountain and the best views of the surrounding peaks, it should be.

Two routes are generally used to reach this summit and both begin from the Canyon Creek Trailhead.

Following the east ridge to the summit includes short sections of Class 2+ and Class 3 climbing. Unfortunately, it also requires some dreadful bushwhacking through deadfall initiated by the Bitterroot wildfires of 2000.

The best route follows the Canyon Creek Trail to its apex above and before Canyon Lake, then goes off-trail (Class 2) and climbs through open woods on the south face of the ridge to the ridge-crest and the summit.
