After the three-mile, easy-going hike to Heart Lake, many backpackers like to travel on, ascending to Pearl Lake (Trail 175). It’s another mile if you follow trail 171.
You can also hike a game trail that runs along a small waterfall, which trickles over rocks and through floral vegetation into Heart Lake, but you could end up rerouted trying to cross the waterfall. The State Line Trail is also in the near vicinity.
Pearl Lake boasts clear, refreshing water, frogs living along the shoreline, and trout swimming in the waters. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a mountain goat coming down for a drink.
