I like how any time a permitting process--whether at the EPA or the MT DEQ--serves as anything other than a 24-hour rubber stamp approval for industry, Republicans will call it flawed. Lately I've also been hearing a new version of this slogan: "site-ing issues." It's like Frank Luntz has been talking to these people or something.
Thanks for another excellent column George. The reaction to this news from the GOP leadership in the state has been quite telling. Basically they are blaming environmentalists and therefore the state GOP have unveiled a host of bills to gut our state's environmental laws and ensure rubber-stamping of future decisions. Fact is, the Highwood coal plant was "derailed" because investors are nervous about dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into coal power plants. This is especially true because we're in the middle of a little something called the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Why is that so hard for Montana Republicans to understand? I was up in Helena earlier this week and it's quite literally like the economic crisis doesn't exist in the mind's of the GOP leadership. Apparently environmentalists are still to blame for all the problems of the world, including the fact that timber mills are closing or laying people off. Never mind the fact that the wood products industry can't even sell the lumber they make right now because the housing crisis and economic meltdown has dramatically reduced demand for wood and lumber products. Apparently, the MT GOP leadership would much rather appeal to their base and blame enviros. It will be interesting to see how history views current efforts of the Montana Republican party related to resource extraction. If somebody would make a movie about the MT GOP's approach it would be titled: Dinosaurs Chasing Dinosaurs.
Matthew, you are so out of line with your fancy liberal logic. Truth is, you enviros are the reason there's no more timber jobs. You enviros are the reason the housing market crashed, and there's no more domestic timber purchasing for those homes. You're also the reason that canadian timber prices undercut Montana's, sending many large-scale contractors north of the border for their timber. It's because of you. Green nazzis. And then you come along with all your big city logic, complicated atheistic scientific facts, and all your fancy liberal jargon like "conservation" and "environmental assessment," and "old growth" ... all that sillified long-hair speak and kickin God out of the public schools so the kids can worship owls and trees. I want my America back... Give it back Matthew.
I have to admit that I was happy to see the Highwood enterprise bomb. With the Republican efforts to allow the coal industry write the legislation on carbon I hope they have to find some happy middle ground with the enviros or find another session.
Gee Al V. Just a couple months ago you were giving George shit about being against the plant. Since you Savior BS was all for it. What changed your mind? Oh yeah, moveon.org, the daily kos the messiah...since he said he would tax coal plants out of this world. SO when they tap into the natural gas and heating bills triple what will you say then. Of course you won't care cuz you probably heat with wood and help pollute Helena's air. You freakin whinocrats oppose anything that could benefit Montana. With as much bs as you blow around, you could harness it all to heat your house!
