Happiest Hour: Five beers we’re most looking forward to trying at Garden City BrewFest 


I've been daydreaming about sipping the vast selection of beer that will be on hand at the Garden City Brewfest at Caras Park tomorrow — and I’m not the only one. My colleagues seem similarly distracted. To help whittle away the hours before the festival commences, we compiled a list of which of the 68 brews we are most looking forward to tasting.

Haybag American Hefeweizen, Philipsburg Brewing Company
“I like a good wheat beer. I also like that Haybag is apparently a term of endearment used by local men when referring to their wives.” - Alex Sakariassen

River Ale, Deschutes Brewery
The River Ale comes in at a relatively low 3.9-percent alcohol by volume. Jamie Rogers is a semi-retired fishing guide who says that heavyweight beers carry too much of a punch for daylong trips or, for that matter, eight-hour brew fests. “It just wrecks you," he says.

Bitch Creek ESB, Grand Teton Brewing Company
Aside from the obvious lure of the name after a long week, I'm intrigued by this extra special bitter and its hoppy malt sweetness that, according to the brewer, is “not for the timid.”

Loquacious Duck, Wildwood Brewing
“Unlike reporters who cannot handle a stronger brew, I intend to make a beeline for a doppelbock that comes in at 8.5 percent, because I, much like the monks who originally developed the style, spent a lot of time in college counting beer as a meal.” - Kate Whittle

Bourbon Barrel Stout, Lone Peak Brewing
“It’s either this one—aged for three months in 18-year-old Elijah Craig bourbon barrels—or the Bourbon Barrel Fred’s Red from Tamarack, which is aged five months in Jim Beam barrels. Either way, I’m able to sate my desire for beer and bourbon with every sip.” - Skylar Browning
