Blodgett Canyon is arguably the Bitterroot's most accessible showcase. A moderate and well-maintained trail leads a dozen miles up along a creek that rages in spring and provides excellent fishing for small trout throughout its approach to the remote Blodgett Lake. But while the canyon is popular with hikers, horsepackers, and kayakers in late spring, Blodgett is best known for its towering faces of chossy Bitterroot granite. Rock climbers come from all over to hit the canyon's multi-pitch walls, ranging from the classic and moderate Shoshone Spire (5.8) to hardman lines like Timebinder (5.12). Those interested in a more moderate adventure can climb the short trail to Blodgett Overlook, an excellent overlook on the canyon's south wall approached from the Canyon Creek Trailhead.
