Even if you’ve never visited the Russell Smith Courthouse or sat in the chambers of its lone federal district judge, Donald Molloy, odds are you’ve discussed the political fallout from one of his landmark decisions. This year alone, Molloy has heard arguments on topics such as the latest challenge to the national sex offender registry, Agriculture undersecretary Mark Rey’s infamous Plum Creek talks and the Bush administration’s gray wolf delisting. Whatever the case, the bold magistrate never fails to speak bluntly and rule unpredictably. After all of this press coverage, none of us really know where Molloy’s political affiliations lie, and that might be the greatest credit one can offer a judge these days.
