<![CDATA[As Jesse Bier's daughter, I can attest to the fact that my mother was indeed affectionately known as Pepee by her family, a nickname derived from the French word poupee, meaning doll. The baby of the family - youngest by 9 years- and full of life and energy, she was much beloved as the little sprite that she was.

<![CDATA[dear ones it may concern;Ms.Laitch quotes the bio which ends with the Biarritz encounter in 1945,with .."and there you have it.",but for Missoulians especially, that's only the beginning...some how Mr. Bier ende up in Missoula ,where he taught at what was then known as MSU,now our UM in the English Dept. of Humanities(LA A close friend of my father's, Jesse was indeed married to a lovely french jewish lady( with a name much like Pepee,i''ve forgotten it,i was like.\,so young). They came to faculty parties and played poker. He was an allright guy ,if a bit sqaure. My father was head of the english dept. in the 50's and early sixties ,and during those years Jesse Bier and his somehow mysterious wife, were like a part of the Fiedler extended family.Anyhow, geez,!that's great his book is out and i must soon read it.

<![CDATA[On a serious note, I like it when Ms Laich does book reviews. Her writing gets all 'literary' and takes a serious tone; one that is quite enjoyable.

<![CDATA[I gathered an interesting revelation from this review. It is this: Americans have been conditioned to look at wars abroad as simply 'the war' or something that is not just casually acknowledged - but expected, since the early 1900's.
