I got it thinker there were other family members involved and likely inheritance tax involved, but seemed she'd been able to have enough left over for the property tax with proper planning, that was my point. Not sure why she didn't.

How much worse could it get? The latest projection is that with our resident population around 1 million, many of those adults exempt from taxes, and many more being minors not paying tax, and a lot of folks at the poverty level, who don't have much to tax and a projection that shortly 25% of Montana's population will be over 65, ostensibly not earning an increasing wage income and not having the resources, like Ms Renne, to take the major greed hits of government bureaucrats, what will be the result?
Add to that a high percentage of Montana veterans who can't find a job, just like a lot of other people, or will be unable to earn a living due to disability who likely won't be able to afford property to tax and we're seeing a train wreck heading at us.

Thanks for your comments, Thinker. I didn't get into the specifics of the family's 2005 lawsuit and two subsequent changes in ownership, because it would have consumed a healthy slice of the story and, I felt, detract from the subject of how property taxes are impacting folks in the Flathead.

Thinker, your use of quotation marks is excellent!

The $4.7 million went to a real estate developer who cleared some forest and built some roads after buying the land from “the family” for much less than $4.7 million.

Well, old soil guy, that's a good question. It did say "the family" sold it, so her share is assumed to be less than the total.
Then there's the question of taxes.

While I agree with much of this I have to ask what she did with the $4.7 million from the 2009 sale? And who was in charge of the 2011 state legislature that wouldn't change the appraisal interval?

Maybe it's time for a dreaded sales tax to even out the taxload for residents of Montana, since we're a tourist state. Exceptions for food and prescriptions, especially for seniors, would be expected.
That Government forces people out of their homes based on subjective valuation is unacceptable.
