Those building illegal trails strike me as selfish and short sighted. They're full of rationalizations for why they're allowed to ignore the law and other people's needs and desires.

I cut down many of the trees on Meow Mix in 2005, something for which I still feel ashamed, but what was I suppossed to do, quit my trails job. I fully agree with Mr. Power that any ecological damage caused by the original Meow Mix trail is dwarfed by the impacts from the Lolo N.F.' efforts to close the trail.

Having ridden in the Missoula area from about, let's see, 1984 until '98, I'd have to say that generally now there is a ton of riding available and maintained, and relatively recently opened, that it is rather stunning. Trails that my friends and I discovered and thrashed ourselves up back then, are now established, maintained and frequented.

Great topic and Kudos to Matt Barnes for taking the initiative to get Mountain Bikers organized. Coming from the Midwest where there was virtually no public lands, Missoula's MTB specific trails and advocacy for trails is 10% of what was there.

Owning a MTB and riding it on the Kim Williams isn't the same thing as being among those form whom MTB riding is a focus of their lives.
Andy Kulla used to say he was a mountain biker. Yeah, he owned a bike.
