      <![CDATA[Thanks for this article--this issue really needs to be addressed often and thoughtfully by those who care. I agree with one of the posts that over-breeding of domestic horses is one of the main problems leading toward starvation, abandonment and slaughter.

      <![CDATA[It's true that the native wild horse died out at the end of the Pleistocene. It's true that today's wild/feral horses were brought (introduced) by the Spaniards.

      <![CDATA[No, I'm sorry, the feral horse you see on the landscape today was introduced from overseas. Prior to that, horses did not develop on the North American continent past the Pleistocene Era.

      <![CDATA[Regardless of my opinion of slaughter (which is a mixed and complex bag), "wild" horses are not wild animals (they are feral at best), nor are they native to North America. <br>
<br>
Contraceptive programs are insanely expensive, produce mixed results (they do not always work, even in zoo settings), and are far from ideal for addressing the feral horse issue.
