The last quote of the article really sums up the outlandish problem with this legislation and other Wilderness bills being crafted in the West: "Many legal experts have reviewed the bill," he says, "and have the best intentions to make this language uniquely fit Montana." Guess what everybody, these are PUBLIC LANDS belonging to everybody in and out of Montana.

For those readers interested in a detailed analysis of Sen. Tester's bill from one of the nation's leading experts on natural resource policy and law, I'd highly recommend they check out Dr. Martin Nie's piece at Headwaters News titled, "Questions, opportunities presented by Montana Sen. Jon Tester's Forest Jobs and Recreation Act."

It's available at: http://www.headwatersnews.org/p.ForestJobs…

It would certainly be nice if Sen. Tester and supporters of his bill would address these important questions, which have actually been asked (yet ignored) for months.

As Dr. Nie says in his conclusion, "The above questions are not driven by politics. Nor are they asked with the purpose of trying to defeat the Senator's bill or to criticize his courageous entry into Montana wilderness politics.

Based upon what I have read about the bill (but having not read it myself), I'd say that this bill smells "fishy" -- as if there's a strong interest group (or several groups) putting pressure on Sen. Tester to sacrifice our irreplaceable wilderness to those whose support he wants. This is a very disappointing development from one of the most beautiful states in the U. S.

The discouraging thing is that those of us who appreciate the importance of healthy ecosystems in a scenario of global warming just have to keep struggling endlessly against corporate interests.
