I don't think you are quite up to date on Mr. Springfield and his accomplishments as a musician. I just spent the weekend attending two of his shows. He is more impressive now and puts on a much better show than he ever did in the 80s. And I know because I saw him 4 times back then as well.
Also have you really LISTENED to VIO or S4TEOTW? Because frankly they contain some of the best music he's ever written. His fan base (myself included) wouldn't be as strong as it is today if he didn't continually deliver fantastic music. How many other artists have had a core group of followers since the early 70s when he first got here and some from down under who've been fans since the 60s and his days in Zoot? You can't just write off somebody who can keep those people interested and completely entertained all those years (even when he quit to be a stay at home dad we were still there waiting for new music) as not having a hell of a lot of talent. His lyrics have matured along with all of us and his music continually and consistently rocks with the best of them. He has always been one hell of a guitar player and his music showcases that.
Both of his books were NYT bestsellers. Obviously the man can write. Not just song lyrics (for himself and many others) but now books as well.
He deserves so much more credit than he usually gets. There is so much more to him than Jessie's Girl.
