Being homeless myself I know that this is all so true. You cannot know the circumstances just by looking at a homeless person. Some have mental illness that controls their lives others may have lose jobs and homes at no fault of their own. We should never put all people in the same box and each of us is of our own making but the people in our lives can influence our direction. For some homeless a hand up is much better than a hand out. That small smile may be the start of trust to allow that person to except that hand up.
