A former Montana resident and activist, I've been trying to follow this story from Portland. I've driven Hwy. 12 many times, and cannot imagine the folly-and danger- of caravans the size and weight of these two proposed shipments maneuvering the narrow, curving route to Missoula in winter months. These shipments affect a wider area than the communities they move through: all Montanans would be impacted by the costs of repairing the inevitable damage to roads and bridges.
Reader Dave Skinner should have done more research before he commented on the extent of the opposition to the big rigs in North Central Idaho. According to the Fighting Goliath website, under Megaload Opponents-Published Positions, over 85% of them, 3767 to be exact, signed the Deny Permits Petition presented to the Idaho Transportation Department in September 2010. But then again, it's easier to lob a dismissive one-liner...
