Lake Cameron

With two days to explore the southern Madison Valley, my babe Kara and I were looking for an overnight trip into mountains that would offer four things: an alpine lake, wicked scenery, never-been-there country and the chance to scope some elk for the upcoming hunting season.

Re: “Sawtooth Fire-Downing Mountain Lodge

Wow John and Jen! What an experience, our thoughts have been with you regularly. I hope the new landscaping works out well for you (and all of us) with more, and more open, skiing!

Re: “What song best represents Montana? A discussion of lists, local music and Rocky Votolato

I might be moving to Montana soon
just to raise me up a crop of dental floss
raising it up
WAXING it down...
in a little white box that i can sell up town
by myself i wouldn't have no boss
but i'd be r a i s i n g my lonely dental FLOSS
(raising my lonely dental floss)

well i just might grow me some bees
but i'd leave
the sweet
for somebody else...

but then on the other hand i'd keep THE WAX
and MELT it d
pluck some floss AND swish it around
I'd have me a c ro p
and it would be on TOP

That's why i'm moving to montana
moving to MONTANA soon...
gonna be a dental floss tycoon
MOVING TO montana SOON...

I'm gonna buy me a horse
just about THIS big...
and ride him all along the border line
in my hand
Every other wrangler would say i was mighty grand
by myself i would'nt
have NO boss
b u t i ' d b e r a i s i n g m y l o n e l y

{raising MY lonely DENTAL floss)

Well i might ride along
the border with my tweezers
gleaming in the moon
lighty light

And then i'd get
a cup of COFFEE...
and give my foot a push

over by the dental floss bush

AND then I might j u s t jump back on
and ride like a cowboy into the dawn to Montana

Wow, what a day! Way to make the most of Missoula's extraordinary backyard wilderness. I can't even imagine 100 miles of mtn biking in a day...

Re: “Jon Tester travels with his own meat

We're a meat-eatin family too, and by that I mean wild deer/elk and not the mystery meat you get at rural cafes. We do the same with good coffee too.

A few years back we scored cheapo plane tix to Vegas and $20/day car rental, so we packed up the bags with frozen venison, cook stove (can't bring fuel tho), a travel kitchen and went down for a week-long desert canyoneering trip. Everything worked out great and we feasted like kings on-the-cheap. Only issue was the TSA wouldn't let my babe bring our 8" cast iron fry skillet on board, they must've been afraid she'd whack someone with it. So she had to check it.
