Ch-paa-qn

I made the short but worthy hike to the summit of Ch-paa-qn on Nov. 3 with Dale Bickell, my first trip up there since the mid-90s, when I nearly sliced the end of my finger off by falling on a sharp rock near the summit.

Gash Point

I made my first foray to Gash Point on skis Sunday, and it’s obvious why it’s such a popular destination for backcountry snow fiends.

Opinions on SRAM?

My old school Trek U.S. Postal Service OCLV bike got stolen out of my garage a couple of weeks ago, which is a bummer.

President's note

The next 21 years

When I came to the Indy in 1997, the remains of a composition camera were heaped in the hallway, and a grimy page waxer sat nearby on a shelf, vestiges of the not-so-distant past when the paper was composed on paste-up boards instead of a computer screen.

Pyramid Peak beckons the sled-to-shred crowd

I expected the snowmobile to make some bratty exhaust noise and steer more like a barge than a motorbike. The full body workout required to drive it, however, came as a surprise.

Re: “Big Sky Resort

Please don't hate me for noting that I skied creamy, thigh deep powder in Liberty Bowl today. Soooo nice.

Re: “Montana Snowbowl

Snowbowl closed a week early this season because warm March weather melted enough snow to make coverage marginal. Of course, a winter storm came the week after. Bona fide face shots available today for those willing to hike for their turns, and plenty of snow to ski down to the parking lot. Should be very, very, very good again on Monday—as in thigh deep on the upper mountain.

Re: “Whitefish Mountain Resort

Great spring skiing under blue skies today. Mind-blowing views of Glacier National Park. Thanks to Riley Polumbus for taking me on a few very satisfying runs.

Re: “Big Sky Resort

A mantle of fresh made for some good turns on Monday, Jan. 28. Very nice up top. Dust on crust down lower. The summit's a bit rocky, and we had to pick our way through the top third of Liberty Bowl, but had excellent cut up powder the rest of the way through Screaming Left. Lots of good fun lapping the Lone Peak Triple chair later, with soft snow and good vis.

Re: “Montana Snowbowl

Surprisingly good skiing Jan. 26, and getting better by the hour. Snowing hard around lunchtime, even at the base. It will definitely be worth the trip tomorrow.

Re: “Montana Snowbowl

Outstanding coverage for mid-December. The top skied very well on Sunday, Dec. 16, with a nice soft surface on the groomers and pockets of powder in the trees. But I was glad to have my rock skis at the end of the day. The last couple hundred vertical on Paradise was a minefield. But they're just one good storm away from mid-winter conditions, and it looks like it's coming this week.
