Lake Mountain

The hike to Lake Mountain in the Scapegoat Wilderness looks short on the map, but on the hottest September day seen around these parts in years, the 4,250-feet climb had me totally wrung out by the end of the 9.5-mile round trip.

I made the short but worthy hike to the summit of Ch-paa-qn on Nov. 3 with Dale Bickell, my first trip up there since the mid-90s, when I nearly sliced the end of my finger off by falling on a sharp rock near the summit.

President's note

The next 21 years

When I came to the Indy in 1997, the remains of a composition camera were heaped in the hallway, and a grimy page waxer sat nearby on a shelf, vestiges of the not-so-distant past when the paper was composed on paste-up boards instead of a computer screen.

Re: “Big Sky Resort

Please don't hate me for noting that I skied creamy, thigh deep powder in Liberty Bowl today. Soooo nice.

Re: “What we need now

In an earlier comment rdouglasxavier points out that criminal prosecutions rely on the standard of reasonable doubt. His comment has elicited many more "dislikes" than "likes." I'd be interested to hear more from people who find it disagreeable. Do you perceive the comment as unsympathetic? Irrelevant? Incorrect? Or do some folks desire a less stringent standard for rape convictions?

Re: “Lolo Pass

Great spring skiing on March 16. Even though a lot of snow has melted in the last week or so, it was still as deep as I've ever seen it up there. South faces skied well in the morning, and northern aspects softened up nicely after lunch.

Re: “Council Grove State Park

Lot's of blue-winged olives out around mid-day. Plenty of trout rising in the slough downstream of the parking lot. Lovely fall colors right now, too. We saw four other anglers and what appeared to be a guided boat anchored up in the eddy at the bottom of the slough. Fish were still working when we left around 5:00.

Re: “Sheafman Point

Pretty much snow free as of Memorial Day weekend. Just a few minor patches near the summit.

Re: “Best of the Bowl

Snowbowl closed a week early this season because warm March weather melted enough snow to make coverage marginal. Of course, a winter storm came the week after. Bona fide face shots available today for those willing to hike for their turns, and plenty of snow to ski down to the parking lot. Should be very, very, very good again on Monday—as in thigh deep on the upper mountain.

Re: “Whitefish Mountain Resort

Great spring skiing under blue skies today. Mind-blowing views of Glacier National Park. Thanks to Riley Polumbus for taking me on a few very satisfying runs.
