I'm angry at what Bill Voelker (Comanche tribe) says..."you have eagles losing their lives so their feathers can adorn fancy war dancers who are competing for tens of thousandths of dollars of prize money"!!!! this comment is totally not true! he is obviously not familiar with powwow. First of all, most fancy dancers use dyed Hackle feathers (from chickens I think) to make their bustles. There may be the odd dancer who uses eagle, but usually it is an old school bustle and was more than likely passed down from within a family. Second of all, there is no such thing as "tens of thousandths dollars" offered at any powwow for a single prize. Don't be misguided to think that is why we dance, just to compete for money and over use eagle feathers to help us win! that comment can cause a lot anger from people who don't understand and then they say ignorant things about us native americans, which leads to racism. Don't judge us for the feathers we may wear, our feathers were given to us from my late father and he had them from his younger days many years ago! AND I'm sure that is the same story among most of the powwow dancers! So we are not the reason for the decline of the population.
