Why the hell do we need to a bigger mall? And why pay a real estate investment group to do it? Makes no sense.
This is a perfect example of why the Independent is the best paper in town. Kudos to the staff.
Well done, Alex. Cobell deserves all the praise and admiration we can muster.
Well said, Ochenski. I thought your article was well written and seemingly difficult to criticize.. but I forgot about J.O. and his Tea Party buddies.
Rd journey -- I agree wholeheartedly that preventing problems is much simpler and cheaper than correcting them later.
However, I disagree on the conditions of the Blackfoot today compared to the early 90's. There have been enormous strides in improving the overall biological strength of the river since then, and it is much improved today. Granted, social usage has skyrocketed, but the negative aspects of that -- littering, bad behavior, etc. -- have been mostly restricted to the lower reaches near Missoula, and improved river management has reversed this trend over the past several years.
Where's the outrage? Knife River exceeds its permit by a factor of 3 and all DEQ does is ask them to modify their permit to bring it in line with what they've done???
Why have regulations and laws if we don't enforce them? I've heard the scuttlebutt that DEQ never met a gravel pit it didn't love, and this proves it.
You forgot to also mention Jim Lynch's decision to treat 6,500 negative comments as only one comment because the writers opted to use suggested language offered by NRDC rather than their own words.
Suddenly our ability to write original words instead of saying "I agree with that guy!" determines whether we exist in the government's eyes. This guy is NUTS!
