I copied and e-mailed this piece to Gloria Flora, the then Forest Supervisor of the Lewis and Clark National Forest, briefly mentioned in the article. Below is part of her reply.
Gloria took a lot of heat for that decision. For once, the extractive industries didn't get what they demanded. Not long after that, Gloria was transferred to Nevada as Supervisor of the Humbolt-Toyabe National Forest (a "disciplinary promotion", I think, because she dared to rock the boat).
Again, she ran afoul of the local bumpkins, when she had the temerity to close the last approximately mile of a dead end road to protect bull trout habitat. They raised hell and tore out the closure gate and threatened Forest Service personnel. Like the BLM in the Cliven Bundy case, the forestry circus backed down and refused to prosecute. Gloria was thrown overboard by her superiors in the circus, both U.S. senators (Harry Reid and the other at the time: Bryan or Bryant, I think his name was), and the U.S. attorney for Nevada. Thoroughly fed up, unsupported, disgraced, and no doubt disillusioned, Gloria resigned for the forestry circus, moved back to Montana, and founded the non-profit, Sustainable-Obtainable-Soutions (S-O-S)
I digressed. Here's an excerpt from Gloria's reply to my e-mail :
"We were never able to get the final leaseholders in the Badger-Two Medicine (B2M) to sell their leases, like we did on the rest of the Front. The B2M is the 130,000 acre northern piece of the RMF, adjacent to the Blackfeet Reservation. It is not covered by any protective status in the Heritage Act because the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council at the time was imploding and in general, the Blackfeet feel the B2M was stolen from them and they want it back. They fear any designation which may prevent that, thus are against wilderness designation and anything that smacks of it. However, they don’t want it developed, so after 20 years of work, we have been able to get the entire B2M designated as eligible for listing as a Traditional Cultural District.
"That said, we’re now supporting the FS and USDA in a court case promulgated by a leaseholder demanding to be allowed to drill in the B2M. He’s being represented by none other than the Mountain States Legal Foundation which has spawned the likes of James Watt and Gale Norton. So it ain’t over yet.
"One important note to conservationists everywhere. Pay attention to the designation of Conservation Management Area – it’s essentially the standards imposed by the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. We cap motorized use to the existing miles of open trail or road – after we ensured we got a really good travel plan. Pieces can be moved but miles not increased. This is a way to actually protect roadless areas (in perpetuity if you get it into law) but at a standard less than wilderness (mountain bikes, chain saws, etc. are allowed) with allowance for thinning or restoration work within ¼ mile of existing roads. We’re exploring using this designation in Forest Plans....CMA’s may be a backstop for WSA’s which are going to come under strong attack in MT (Daines has already indicated he wants them all released) and likely other states. No time to waste making sure we don’t let these lands drift back into exploitation."
Well, I can't argue with logic.
Sorry Dan what is weird is your sissy limp solution to a violent crime. In the event of any rape, it is a violent crime committed by a sick demented mind. To fight back is always the best move, yell for help, grab a weapon to stop the pervert, bite, scratch, poke his eyes back into his brain, and don't stop the beating until he is immobile. The trash talked about in this article is pure horse crap. You don't allow someone to take your liberties then months or years later claim rape. Teach these young girls to fight but better yet advise them to watch where they go and whom they are with.
I don't have any idea how many young boys the pervert that I fought off had raped. Maybe I caused him to rethink his ways and quite possibly my actions saved other young boys to not be his next victim. Man up Dan! Be the free thinking man that God meant you to be.
When was the last time you looked at a public school curriculum? You've implied that you didn't enroll your kids in public school, and that was three decades ago. It's possible that your idea of what goes on there is not accurate. I urge you to look at the MCPS curricula and see what's really being taught; it's a lot less "social engineering" and "political correctness" than you might think.
I also urge you to keep to yourself that anecdote about almost beating someone to death. It's weird.
Politics trumping science, now where else have I heard that.
Well Dan nice to see you on the comment side instead of the editorial side for a change. Dan, rape has happened since the beginning of mankind. It is a disgrace what happens when the court destroys a woman who has been raped. That is what the legal profession calls defense!
Any lawyer that would knowingly defend a rapist is no better than his client. The entire court system and law enforcement system is for sale as we saw in the Grizz rape fiasco a while back.
The real issue of this disaster is the public school intruding where it does not belong. Children at age 5 don't need to be taught about deviant alternative life styles. Children at age 12 don't need to be told about sex from the public school. These are issues that belong to the family and church. The government is not the "baby daddy!" All the public schools have done this last 30 years is graduate a bunch of illiterates who think that homosexuality, premarital sex, and abortion as birth control are just fine. So what are we to expect from this generation? There is no moral compass, no absolutes, and the cheapening of the value of ones life and liberty.
Do you not see that this is the intended consequence when parents are taken out of the equation and they ignorantly allow others to teach and raise their children. We did not even consider putting our children in a public school 30 years ago. Back then we considered it casting our pearls before swine. Today the public school with it's emphasis on social engineering and political correctness spends precious little time teaching these kids the basics to have a marketable skill as adults.
Ignorant people like yourself are the reason for the decline in morality. By the way Dan I was never raped! You are right about that. I was attacked by a faggot, bull queer when I was 14 years old. The outcome was not what this man expected from a boy. I never stopped kicking him in the head and neck until he was almost dead. I did not run to the police! I did not call an ambulance! He was still breathing when I walked away and never looked back.
Shelly, you're the REAL MVP!!!! #AGREED #listentothepeople
Right on Shelly n Leonard! Everything you said is true! Thanks for standing tall in the face of opposition! Nice to see the occasional backbone. I see 8 other people who forget what its like to go to bed hungry, if you have a bed. Unemployment, homelessness, and rampant addictions are far more important than yet another monument to mediocre leadership. Keep fighting the good fight. We need industry an opportunity here in the middle of the rez, where the people are. We don't need to panhandle on the border. As for the rest of you, put our money where our mouth's are!
If there's a buck to be made, no matter how, a Republican is gonna make that buck, screw the consequences.
Idaho's idiocy has overflowed into the Bitterroot
It's sad, but one of the many bad things Indian people seem to have learned from us whites is corrupt politics. It seems that tribal politics and politicians are influenced just as much as non-Indian politics and politicians are by power trips, cronyism, granting and returning favors, back scratching, and of course, short-term vision and the always popular money.
I guess this boils down to a free speech issue, in this case "commercial speech", which in my opinion is and oxymoron because commercial entities aren't "real" people and shouldn't be granted the same constitutional rights as Homo sapiens; the U.S. Supreme court be damned. But the supremes have spoken, so at least for the foreseeable future, that's a moot point. But free speech does have it's limits, it isn't absolute : You can't yell "Fire !" in a crowded theater. Liable and slander laws, etc.
And then there's the matter of just plain common decency and respect for the sensitivities of others -- which the world seems to be in short supply of -- whether we agree with them or not (Think of the Charlie Hebdo situation).
I come down firmly on the side of Mr. Running Crane. Great Northern's arguments and excuses are laughably weak and, indeed, pathetic.
Shelly and Leonard keep fighting the good fight - I'm proud of you for standing up against the majority. Yeah Lloyd says the feasibility study has been done for three years, but since then there's been new councilperson's voted in who have a mind of their own and don't just go along with whatever the "good ol boys" want. It's about time we get some people on the council who are looking out for the best interests of the people instead of themselves!
Every time someone writes about rape in this paper or in the Missoulian, I tell myself not to read the comments. Then I do. Shame on you for thinking that "women don't get raped" and "women shouldn't get raped, because their dads should frighten people" are even coherent ideas, much less arguments.
There are people trying to do something about this problem, and all you can respond with is your experience as smug old men. I believe you when you say you have no respect for anyone too intimidated to withdraw consent. You speak like someone who has never been sexually intimidated in his life.
THE CSKT Tribal council could care less what it's member think. And because of the intimidation the tribe uses on those who disagree, most are afraid to speak out. Take the current CSKT water compact that is going to the legislature to be approved or disapproved.... members who have spoken out against the compact have been intimidated. Example, when their grazing leases comes up, the tribal council refuses to re-new their lease even though they are the the only, or highest bidder. Or they are threatened with the loss of their tribal jobs. The intimidation and thuggery that goes on is unbelievable. I talked to one tribal employee who talked about misuse (embezzlement of Federal Funds) who wants to expose it, but fears for his life if he did.
What planet are we on? Good heavens, are people really getting this stupid that schools have to tell them how to meet and be intimate. Where are their parents? Mutual respect and just plain common decency dictate actually communicating and knowing someone prior to engaging in any act of intimacy. It is called dating and is a rather old fashioned concept. It has worked well for centuries.
It goes like this. Boy meets girl. They like each other and agree to spend time together. The girl communicates with her father that she likes a young man and would like to continue a relationship with him. Boy must meet dad so he can be intimidated before he gets permission to date his daughter. Girls dad is cleaning his 44 magnum pistol at the dinner table while he asks the boy all of the important questions about his intentions towards his daughter. Boy is scared to death and has the girl home from the date earlier than required. Girls father is patiently waiting at the front door for his daughter to get home. Father waves goodbye to the nice young man with his left hand while his right hand rests on the butt of his revolver. Now tell me do you see a school mentioned or involved in this dating ritual? Not needed! All that should be required are parents who are involved in their children's lives.
In the event that the "Baby Daddy" ( sperm donor) not be present for the raising of the young lady in question I would suggest the mom procure a large butcher knife and sharpening stone to use at the table while questioning the boy. A large bore handgun is more intimidating but the thought of an angry middle aged woman with a sharp butcher knife does send the proper message. Nuff Said
It's very unfortunate that candidates not supported by this legal firm will most likely not be elected.
I'd like a detailed expose on this firm, and I'd like it on the front cover of an upcoming Independent.
How can you ever make a comment about the Bitterroot without including the words "blithering idiots"???
Affirmative consent turns every consensual sexual act into a potential sexual assault. There is no way to gain consent for every action taken (depending on how you define it, a typical sexual encounter involves hundreds of even thousands of separate actions). It would make sex impossible. How about individuals take the responsibility to COMMUNICATE with their partners and tell them if they withdraw consent. I have no respect for anyone who thinks that is an unfair burden, especially given the stakes involved. If you are too intimidated to verbally withdraw consent you are too immature to be in mixed company, let alone be sexually active.
Why are you still regurgitating the 1 in 5 statistic when it has been resoundingly debunked by a DOJ study last December? It's not 1 in 5, it's more like 1 in 40.
