Don't forget to add this to the "Drunk on Power" list....From a recent Indy no less....
Power grab: Bitterroot considers case for state ownership of public lands
The accusations of graffitti, littering and disturbing wildlife are completely unfounded. Whitewater kayakers are among the staunchest practitioners of 'leave no trace' ethics. People should have some idea of what they are lambasting before choosing to speak. The kayaking ban is on par with a hiking ban. Allowing a controlled access system similar to the back country permit system is a rational and enforceable means of allowing a reasonable activity. Kayaking has been proven time and again a legitimate, sustainable, low/no impact recreational pursuit.
Wow, you guys really don't understand kayaking at all, do you? You should come down off your ivory tower for a sec and actually MEET a few of us and you might realize that we are just people, the same as you. The vast majority of whitewater kayakers are NOT interested in adrenaline rushes or (seriously??) "splashing grafitti across any beautiful Yellowstone river." We enjoy floating through beautiful, wild places, the same as you. We follow "leave no trace" ethics. We pack out our trash. We inform ourselves of local regulations. We don't camp on riparian areas or use soap in the river. We hang our food when we are in bear country. We go for hikes from camp. We gaze at the landscapes and try not to complain when our views of the shore are occluded by packs of immature hikers...
Sure, we could keep the park closed to kayakers. There are plenty of other places to kayak. There are also plenty of places to hike. There are plenty of places to drive around in cars and honk at some poor bear savaging somebody's unattended cooler. There are plenty of other places to swim, ski, to gawk at geological oddities. So here's a better idea: why not close the park to ALL enthusiasts. It will be a very beautiful, quiet, serene place for the bison and grizzly to share, and there won't be any humans there at all to ruin it. Or, perhaps, we could allow ALL reasonable enthusiasts access, and prosecute the small minority who cause trouble instead of stereotyping and scapegoating groups of people we know nothing about.
These comments about whitewater paddling are quite shocking to me. I encounter hikers and horseback riders on riverside trails often. Most of them are good people. To call all paddlers destructive is simply wrong. To bar a wilderness compliant human powered activity is short sighted and unfair.
It’s about time!
If she not already done this, I would suggest that she gets with the local police departments. Educate herself on police policy, rules of evidence and other forms of investigations so she can answer questions from students when it comes to these sort of crimes.
When I go out in the back country I bring back everything I take into the wild. I love my state and its natural beauty. I believe everyone has the right to enjoy the parks that are emplace just the way they are.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve packed out someone else’s trash or dived down to the bottom of the river and picked up a glass bottle that had been sunken by a rafter, kayaker or someone floating.
I’m not saying everyone is like this but there are the few that will paint up the canyons with graffiti, dump trash on the banks and sink those bottles in the river.
I say keep them out!
There's something special about camping on Yellowstone National Park's back country rivers and knowing that you won't see a flotilla of rafts and kayaks coming through. Not to mention the positive impact of not disturbing the wildlife that finds sanctuary along the banks of the rivers. Keep Yellowstone's rivers closed to river runners. There are plenty of places for these crafts to play.
Hi David... I never saw City Confidential during its initial run, but I tape every episode on Bio now. They happened to show the Bigfork one this week. As I usually do, I looked up the case after the show and found your now 11+ year old post. Very interesting, just wanted to thank you. I think that show is amazingly well done, and I always get so much out of "act one" and the way the community and its characters are delved into (as much as one can in 15 minutes). Compared to the 24/7 true crime programming we have now, which I admittedly enjoy, full of its bloody reenactments... CC is a show that is true to place, people, and local opinion. It's pretty cool that you were a part of it. Wishing you all the best. -Shannon
Genius light look again. Clearly the couple to the left of the "hetero couple" are a man and woman. That blows your theory to hell. Think you need a new prescription for eyewear. Looking at the couple on the right, you're wrong again!
these folks are stupid ignorant egotists , they should at the very least ban them for life if caught in any park breaking laws set up years ago to protect, not commercialize these diamonds of our country. They are probably the same folks illegally making bike trails, etc.. Seems we have come to a crossroads with our population where rules need to be stiffened up 200% to allow some resemblance of sanity for the rest of us that do not need or want hi tech garbage, and inflated egos to float past our view we hold precious in our life
If wild places cannot be preserved in our National Parks, they will not be preserved anywhere.
Let the wild be wild.
Let the sky jumpers, white water adrenalinists and mechanized snow spoilers play in their own back yards and leave this wild place to itself.
"A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise." Aldo Leopold
I absolutely support Yellowstone National Park Chief Ranger Tim Reid and The Greater Yellowstone Coalition. Conservation and preservation of the park's resources comes first and foremost. Some day, kayaker Ben Kinsella will mature and stop thinking only of himself and his sense of entitlement to do anything he wants anywhere he wants. Meanwhile, Yellowstone and her environs, with the help of folks like Reid and the Coalition's Pearson, will prevail...for all time, for those of us who want to get her glad tidings, without the yahooing of the of extreme recreationists playing with their adrenalin. Nature first, for once, please.
I surf and canoe whitewater but I don't ever want to look down and see some adrenaline junkie in a garish plastic "watercraft" slashing graffitti across any beautiful Yellowstone river. I support the ban - forever. Go somewhere else.

Go U of M!!! Cyber Security's importance is finally beginning to be taken seriously and it needs to start in College so the businessmen and women of tomorrow understand the landscape of digital commerce in the 21st Century.
I would encourage you to read how companies like OPSWAT are adocating the use of multi-scanning to validate the integrity of file streams and external media.
I posted this a long time ago concerning hate groups. I think it stands to repost it in this article. It’s the same hate with just a new paint job.
I just hope and pray that Montana doesn’t get a bunch of racist people moving in. Our state is one of the best states in the U.S. to live in, if not the very best.
Yes, I don’t agree with a lot of things people say concerning Montana. Normally it’s from the people who move into Montana and voice stupid crap like Medical Marijuana and shove their opinions onto others with no research to back it up. Or when they try to destroy some of the values I was raised up with like saying Merry Christmas or throwing a fit over a statue. I don’t like how some of the people go on about oil, gas and other uses of our natural resources when they drive vehicles, heat their homes with and use the very products they protest. They are all bigots in my eyes! I say if you don’t like my state and the way taxpaying citizens want it, move out.
But most of all I can’t stand white, black, yellow, red or whatever color of race that brings hate into Montana. I would much rather put up with the dope smokers, people who are doing their best to close public land from hunters, voters that don’t pay taxes laying upon taxpayers there stupid plans to pay for and all the rest of the yuppies.
It just sickens me to think this is happening in Montana and I would encourage all Montanans to boycott anything attached with any hate group. I encourage all Montanans to research how these hate groups suck you into their twisted ways of thinking because they are far worse than the rest and will bring hate and distrust. They will hurt your local law enforcement and take away from you their ability to protect your rights. You better wake up Montana before it’s too late.
Montanans, you need to be very careful with these people and God bless you!
Here a nice video of the wolf taking a baby moose away from its mother and killing it. Play it all the way through so you can hear the woman crying. So the myth that the wolf just takes the old and diseased is a lie.
Denali wolf kill 2 0f 2
Here is another video where a wolf attacked a person hunting as well as killed some domestic dogs.
Hunter Becomes The Hunted In Idaho Wolf Attack
Wolfs trying to use pack tactics to kill unarmed people.
Wolves become increasingly violent towards humans, pets
Also I bet you didn’t know that the wolf will run pregnant cow elks until they stress them and they abort there unborn baby to get away from the pack. So the berthing time for the elk is feasting time for the wolf. Then the wolf will stay with the herd and pick off the new born elk that survives the abortion process. Yes there are lots of things the supporter of the wolf are not telling you.
These videos go on and on. I think its time for the truth about the wolf to come out and all this misinformation and lies to stop.
One more time. Be warned and don’t take the wolf lightly or you could find yourself on the wrong end of the wolf if you venture to far off the beaten path while out in the woods. The good news is that man also adapts quite well and you will see the number rise as the elk and deer wither away to nothing and the wolf moves into populated areas.
Not to take away from this victim of war but I took part of your story and added a new twist to it. What do you think?
“When I became conscious, it was a dead base.” The college students in the room are silent as young sailor stands in front of them. It looks as though he wears light pink lipstick but that’s a lip balm to ease the pain. Up close, the scars around his mouth, neck and hands are clearly visible.
The morning Japanese pilots dropped bombs on his base called Pearl Harbor, 72 years ago, this sailor was 17. It was the first day off and he was going to Sunday school, and he and his shipmates were out on the street. “It was beautiful blue sky,” he says. “I looked at the sky, the airplane I saw, and I told my shipmates next to me, ‘Look. That plane is so pretty.’”
“I saw things dropping,” he says, referring most likely to the bombs and torpedoes, which were dropped by Japanese war planes. “Next, a very strong wind knocked me down. Then, I black out.”
With a third of his body burned, he spent the next five days drifting in and out of consciousness in a school dormitory because the hospitals were full with other wounded and he was not expected to live, repeating his name and serial number and asking for a drink of water.
A group of American citizens, horrified by the unprovoked sneak attack and bombing of a U.S. base America declared war on the Empire of Japan.
Ok I’ll stop there. You see there are two sides to every story. We wont go into the Bataan Death March, the beheadings of US service men and citizens of the Philippines, forced labor camps or the massive rape and killings committed in China by the Empire of Japan.
“Why is America still making nuclear weapons?” It’s so other peaceful nations of the world will never have to suffer the crimes committed by the Empire of Japan or Adolf Hitler’s Germany during World War Two.
I do want to add that I believe war should only be a last resort and it’s never the fix all answer. I find your articles to be very bias and anti American. I wonder why you live here if you hate America so badly. You do realize these men and woman died for your freedoms. Is this the best you can do in there honor?
