Re: “Foggy nostalgia

I had a problem with it too.I also have problems with Pynchon's novels so I wasn't surprised.V is the only one I've read straight through.Twice as a matter of fact.Your review didn't help me much either. I guess Pynchon just isn't for me even though I envy him down to my little toe for studying with Nabokov at Cornell when I might have audited a lecture now and then.Just jealousy I suppose.

I did love The Master beyond belief. So here's a link to my review of it for you.Hope it goes through.… Read the comments as my friend from Bosnia wrote most of the insightful ones.

Re: “Strange, but true

Turner has a long slow contemplative sense of time.It is that moment in history where industrialization - capitalism - is just beginning.Turner is acutely aware of this as he watches the smoke from a ship among smaller ones with sails. When we see him seeing the train, the smoke, the lovely undulations in it and a smoke ring as a touch of aesthetic humor, we see the paradox of the destruction of the landscape it will make in the future, and also the beauty if you allow yourself time to contemplate, an experience that is leaving humans very quickly.I guess this is what I like so much about your writing Molly, your determination to continue to contemplate and write from that perception. It is a lovely gift to your readers and one worth keeping for yourself.

I studied with John McCoubrey at one time. An art historian of the 20th century who was the recognized Turner specialist. You might want to find his book at the library. It is a gem.He himself was a romantic in his perception and a generous man with his mind, a perfect biographer for Turner, an often crude man.

Re: “Risk takers

You failed to mention, in 2001, HAL eliminates the crew to fulfill the mission. In Interstellar, Matt Damon is the logical human that tries to eliminate the crew to fulfill the mission.

Re: “Hell holes

While some of the film was a stretch, a tiger vs. a Sherman, and the battle at the crossroads. I don't believe you and others understand the point the film was trying to convey by use of the two other scenes you mention and the other scenes you omitted in your review.

Re: “Case dismissed

This commentary gives a critical look at the Judge, but there are its moments.

Re: “Rush to judgment

My problem with it is that I happen to know Flynn lifted it almost in toto from Joyce Carol Oates's recent novel Carthage. Even the town/city is the same. We have changed identities, missing girl, man blamed only Oates put him in prison and writes a far better novel. Guess Flynn hasn't studied her "influence" enough - as she refers to Oates.

Add some more from Oates's The Grave Digger's Daughter and Mudwoman for 2 more and GG is rounded out. Reading it through tiqqun's Young Girl reveals deeper strata in both.Flynn wrote 10 years for Entertainment Weekly so what else is new. She liked it there too getting to see a lot of junk movies and get paid for writing about them.

Time to read more David Foster Wallace. I've been saving some because when I'm finished with what I have there aren't going to be any more. Aspartame killed him you know. Don't take anything with that stuff in it if you are depressed.Depressed is a clinical term I hate. I prefer melancholy.

Should have made Oates novel into the film but no one seems to read good writers anymore since only YA sells big. Oh well.

Re: “Pretzel brain

I love Brazil. It's a typically haunting Terry G movie with that twisted Victorian/Edwardian weirdness that combines a deep reverence for tradition with brutal criticism of the very institutions it holds dear.

Re: “Koch problem

Why don't you do an article on the EVIL George Soros, the billionaire who says he would like to see the US dollar collapse and would like to help make it happen. The guy who has donated over a billion dollars to left wing liberals over the last decade. Once again you show how one sided you are. Why doesn't some one do an article about WHY Obama had lawyers hide all of his college records (and other records from his past). Why would a presidential candidate go to those lengths to hide his past?? Answer me that also.

Re: “We are the new polar bear

Polar Bears were indigenous to as far south as Minnesota upon settlement but called the Yellow Bear because it retained its summer coat longer but still the same bear. But keep the finger on the panic button anyways.
