I'd like to respond to the comment by Bathurst Native. I say that when life gives you rocks you can always use them to build a rock garden. If indeed all that has been left behind is a war zone, what those in power might do is work on bringing in a film crew and check out the viability of building this property into a film location perhaps even a film studio. MGM eat your heart out.
If you ever read this, Jim, I'm so sorry for your loss. I had no idea you lost your son so close to the death of my Grandpa Mike. That must have been an extremely tough month. Thank you for sharing your story with the Missoula Independent.

I have a master's degree in psychology and a bachelor degree in biology. Sometimes it takes years to correctly identify a diagnosis and to prescribe the right medications that do not aggravate the condition. What amazes me is that this prison psychiatrist set this young man up for failure by not keeping him on medications that were working for him. You do not help the mentally ill by torturing them further! It is inhumane to do so. I have watched my own grandson be tortured because of the ignorance of the current judicial system in Great Falls, Montana. There are other professionals who do acknowledge this is wrong. Others do not care to intervene. Injustice currently happened to my grandson when he was doing so well and is not guilty of the charges. There was a partial judge on his case that I asked to be recused long ago. This young man was attending his Christian church, had finally talked someone into giving him a chance and hiring him, and was taking care of his family. he had already been held i isolation for 6 months before this judge's latest ruling. A plea bargain had already been reached by the attorney including the prosecuting attorney, and the psychiatrist..and yet the judge sentenced him to 15 years for ridiculous charges that are not even the truth. I intend to fight this to the end and also write the governor and editors of other newspapers before my grandson manages to commit suicide in their corrupt system of justice.
As a student at U. Montana and a resident of Brantley Hall in the' 80's, I can attest to the haunted reputation of this former dormitory. In fact, after hearing about the ghost, I decided to instigate an investigation of my
own. Some of the things I experienced were: french doors that opened on their own accord, loud banging noises on
my dorm room door, a phone call from the dead; my room-mate witnessed my doppelganger once, and another
time, after I had skipped a certain english class, I found out later that someone, unbeknownest to me, had taken my place during class. The class professor was a real stickler for alphabetical seating. Anyway, the next day when I returned to class, I was asked, "Who was your friend?" to which I replied, "What friend?"
It was explained to me that someone who looked very similar to me had sat in my chair and took notes. I replied that I hadn't asked anyone to do that. My classmate and I were both mystified to say the least! There are too many incidences to list, but I remember each and every one as if it were yesterday. I finally stopped my snooping into the past, when a friend of mine warned me of a dream she had had about me.. and what might happen to me were I to continue my 'ghost busting'. Well, that was all I needed to hear and I stopped immediately.

How do I get to try out for the Phoenix next year. I can't find anything online about how to go about signing up or showing up or whatever. Some one help me out please.
I'm reading this after the 1491s aired on the Daily Show. I'm a teacher on a Rez in northern Manitoba, the same lands my father's side of the family calls home. My class and I are fans of the 1491s, and have laughed our way through several of your videos. It all began with a kid coming in and telling me about Slapping Medicine Man and spiralled from there. We watch your guys when we're talking about voice and stories... When we're talking about identity... When we're talking about current events. You come up a lot.
Know that there are a lot of young, indigenous kids watching you on youtube, on APTN, and now the Daily Show. You're showing us possibilities. We've seen what happened when you put cameras in the hands of people from all over. We've watched your TED talk, and we regularly pick up our own cameras, because we have stories to tell, too.
...and now I've found print! Thank you for writing. Thank you. You and the 1491s are a teacher's dream!
Selma Tingey is my Grandmother. I am in search of info about her, her husband and the Snake River Trout Company they founded in 1928. If anyone has any info please reach out to me at email@example.com .. thanks!
Cry me a river, what a bunch of libatards... all you people are trying to tell others how to live and what is "right". It must be nice to just live an easy life and judge others off of ignorance and lack of living as a farmer or rancher who's animals you buy at the grocery store - as processed meat. What is sad is the ignorance of the hippie agenda thinking the world is heaven on earth. Try thinking of that next time you eat a burger, piece of chicken, steak, even eggs... you are murdering animals by those acts- or supporting their murder.

That was a good well written article! The cnn story seemed biased. This one seemed the opposite of that.
I learned about this subject in class just recently. Before learning about the Native-American view I didn't quiet understand what the problem was. I do feel like understand more at least there point of view. With the team Redskins I can see that as racist and Native-Americans do have a point in saying that is raciest. My point of view is that teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Indians or Florida State Seminoles weren't trying to be racist but chose a symbol or icon that they admired in what they represented or stood for. The Seminoles were the only Native-Americans to withstand the U.S. government from controlling them. And knowing that why wouldn't you want to name a team after a group of people who were able to do something so great. Looking at other college teams like Michigan State Spartans they named their team after a group of people who they admired. The Spartans were obviously great warriors and I think teams that have Native-American logos had this kind of thinking when choosing their logos.
I enjoyed reading this article for more details on him after seeing the story on CNN. Very well written article. Since I am from WV, I wonder what part of the state Chance Chezem has an old family farm in?
This was an interesting article about the land and a man. I relate to his concern to protect the land and the stream that runs through it as I also live on an Oregon stream. Those who come onto the land from outside often throw around garbage and have no sense of stewardship. I love Montana dearly but sometimes decisions need to be revisited! First should come what is best for the stream and land-- humans, including fishermen, should come after that
My dad's ex-girlfriend Jessica had and encounter in the University. I don't know where she was just that it happened. Her and her friend were having a good time, wandering at night, hoping to encounter a spirit. They were walking when they heard a group of students behind them, laughing and walking. They turned around, and the hallway was completely empty except for them. Jessica said "If somebody is here give us a sign" or something of that sort. Just then the loud clang of the clock went of. Coincidence? I think not.
Ironic that the same government who committed genocide on our ancestors is now claiming they want to protect us from a word. Give me a break! We're not victims, quit acting like it, its absolutely patbetic. Regardless of how we feel about the name, government has ZERO business removing property rights from anyone because THEY believe a word is offensive. Who supports this intrusion??? Is this what we want - administrations using the full force of government to intrude on our rights... AGAIN! Of all people, we should know better! ENOUGH WITH THE GOVERNMENT WORSHIP ALREADY! Have we learned nothing?
I don’t find anything predigest or racist about any of this and I am a Native American. I don’t think any Native Americans I know cares about this issue. I and several other Native Americans think it’s an honor to see these symbols on sports teams. Before you people jump on this ban wagon, maybe it would be nice to get a vote by the majority of Native Americans and not just assume or take the word of just a few Native Americans looking for their 15 minutes of fame.
