Re: “UM buyouts a 'win-win-win?' Not so fast.

A lot of these faculty can't retire because it'd drive their cost of insurance up. It's why so many professors 'retire' and then come back a semester later to work part-time. It saves them hundreds if not a thousand dollars or more a month in insurance premiums. Then it's just waiting to hit 65 and Medicare age.

So...how's that going to be addressed?

Re: “Indy sign (inevitably) vandalized

That pisses me off ! Sold down the river. If that isn't confirmation that worship of money is the religion of this damn country now, nothing is. Nothing is sacred anymore, money rules EVERYTHING in this country now.

Free thinking? Yeah if you're living in a "progressive" bubble.

Re: “So, about that sale...

It will take awhile but when you look at the other purchases; the Adit in Helena, Mini-Nickel in Bozeman, the Thrifty Nickel in Billings, etc. They all become part of the daily newspaper eventually. First the right-sizing, then the "great cross-selling opportunities", then "why not save money by moving in to the Missoulian" then, "Why do we have duplicate management?", then "Wow, the numbers are really looking bad, we should deliver the Indy in the Missoulian to save money", then it fades away. The really sad thing is that Matt and Lynne were given a plan to fix things in short order but thought it might cause too much stress. Matt is about to understand stress.

Re: “So, about that sale...

Well, looks like my support and ad dollars will be moving to the Missoula Current, apparently one of the last independent news sources in MT.

Re: “So, about that sale...

I worked for the Missoulian in the early 90's around the time the Lee stooges bought the Messenger and killed it. That is what they do: buy and klll. It is time for a new newspaper. Cancel your subscription to the Missoulian. Support the Flathead Beacon.

Re: “So, about that sale...

First thought: OH SHIT!
Second thought: OH SHIT!
And it continues: OH SHIT!

The Missoulian ain't the paper it once was, but we still had the "Independent"...now what?

In the late 90s when the Independent started printing all those real estate ads, we noticed some changes, but it held on to its' own identity....this is not good for Missoula, or independent journalism.

Re: “So, about that sale...

They wouldn't buy you if they didn't see a way to profit from it. And "nothing will change" isn't a way to profit. Good luck guys!

Re: “So, about that sale...

I'm hoping for the best, but anticipating the worst. The Missoulian has been on a slow descent in quality over the past few years. This year they have been positively schizophrenic in their behavior, taking all kinds of extreme actions with little or no explanation to their readers. I can't help but feel that the purchase of the Independent is just an effort by the Missoulian to eliminate the competition, either quickly, or slowly through neglect. I'm hoping for the best, but...

Re: “So, about that sale...

A name change will be required. You are no longer Independent. I suggest the Dependent.

A sad day for Missoula.
