Re: “Ethical leftovers

"...our area's best chefs aren't exactly eager to showcase Tofurky."
Ha ha! Why is it that non-vegans can't seem to get past the Tofurky shtick? It's the all-purpose, go-to putdown, yet that's only one product of many, and not even the best. Constantly falling back on Tofurky as a defensive putdown is lazy, at the very least.

As for some of the films listed here, it feels more like a continuation of "last week's slight."
How about Earthlings http://earthlings.com/ --the film that many people have credited for turning them vegan overnight? How about The Witness? http://www.witnessfilm.org/ Or The Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home http://www.peaceablekingdomfilm.org/ --about the emotional lives of farmed animals? Then there's Vegucated http://www.getvegucated.com/ --about three meat-eating New Yorkers who take a stroll along the path to veganism.

Yeah, many of these films are downers, because animals' commodified lives are downers, and how do you dress that up to be fun? Maybe it's just an inconvenient truth easily side-stepped with Tofurky jokes.

Re: “Ethical leftovers

Skylar Browning you're a man after my heart. I want to add Troll 2 and Best Worst Movie, a documentary about the legend of Troll 2. The screenwriter says she chose to make the goblins who live in Nilbog plant-eaters as an anti vegetarian statement, which is hilarious and awesome as I'm sure many important film scholars have said.
Year of the Dog is pretty boring but I liked it better than you.

finally, check out my new catchphrase:

Re: “No flame

Having read all three novels, I believe that the two-part finale will be a flop with the Young Adult audience that was targeted by the novels. I think the Mockingjay movie will be too political and too bloody. The romance will be totally over shadowed.

Josh - stop writing the things that are in my head better than I can think them. (See? You just did it again!)

Re: “Poor form

Gavin Hood did the movie? Should have guessed it would thunk. I saw "Rendition" and it is the only movie to elevate "Super Troopers" from the dead bottom of my personal movie ranking. Whew! And I found "Ender's Game" the book, to establish something of an archetype in my mind.

A well-written review, incidentally.

Re: “Poor form

Never read the book, which I think works in my favor because I thought this movie was great! Likely because 1. I love movies about kids doing grown up things. 2. Limited though I'm sure it is in the film compared to the novel, I enjoyed the experience of watching Ender navigate the world as a game of strategy and the moral choices he's faced with making.
CGI is bullshit, as many important critics have said, but if it ever had a purpose, surely it would be for interstellar warfare! Still, I agree that the CGI is not very good.
Overall, I'd say reading this review really added something to my life.

Re: “Come together

Congrats, Columbia grad. My son has studied at Ramapo College in your class and talks about you fondly. He is a graduate, Communications/Writer, and this reward or prize you won is a win for him too. He can add your name to his cover letters, as he tries to find work, to impress that he has had good training. Stating that you have written for six years and in many different varieties shows how long and hard it takes for repayment. Your achievement is a guide for all young professional. You are an example of a limerick I remember, “The only short cut I can offer you is Hard Work.” Good Luck and God bless.

Re: “Oscars wild

you're right, Lionel. It's the best supporting actor category where they've all won, I think I conflated the two in my head when I was writing it.

I did guess 4/5 correctly though, you will give me that.

Re: “Oscars wild

Phoenix is the only one in this category without a win under his belt."

Um what? Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper have not even been nominated. Bad editing, Indy.

Re: “Crazy in love

As a fan of Robert DeNiro, it's good to hear that he actually TRIES and acts in this movie, (as opposed to simply 'being there' in his last dozen + movies) but I wasn't aware of Chris Tucker's 'hair-obsessed mental patient cameo' and look forward to it. Ms. Laich summed up the movie nicely. I shall believe the hype, accordingly...

Re: “Come together

Congrats, growing up where you did, and then going into the real world, you can easily see and relate to the depths of horror, depravity, racism, ignorance is bliss that the rest of the world fears so much. Will keep my eye out for your name. Good luck

Re: “Found at sea

Once again, Molly Laich manages to make a movie review: a delight. The only question now is do I read the book or catch the flic now, in theaters?

Re: “Physical therapy

I don't usually read film reviews, but I'll read Molly's due to her delicious snippets like "The priest has a weird haircut that I theorize speaks to a growing disconnect between what the clergy does and the modern world—but I might be over-thinking the hair." Hilarious! Well-written. etc. Also, what the hell is going on with the Wilma? I thought they had new owners! Maybe put some money into a new film-player-thingy, yo!

Re: “Uneasy course

"It's possible to be both very good at your job and a hopeless alcoholic." POWERFUL Molly Laich! I love Denzel Washington. If you have not seen his brilliant portrayl of Malcolm X: do so! He's so much fun to watch. I'm glad Ms. Laich concurs.

Re: “Time bandits

This movie sounds complex and thus confusing, however, Ms Laich did an excellent job of talking it out and her enthusiasm for this film really came through. Excellent movie review. Fun and informative. Very well-written.

Re: “Married to the mob

Andy - excellent review. I saw Gomorra last night with a friend and was struck with just how powerful and gripping the realism was. Would not see this movie twice, since I certainly won't forget it! Your review help contextualize it - thanks for taking the time to write this....Marc
