I'm so proud of you. I know from second hand experience how this system changes both the kids and foster families. I grew up around foster families that nurture their charges to this day, often into late adulthood. But I've also had first hand experience with those who've not been as fortunate. I love your work and I wish I could be there Tuesday.
I have worked at a group home here in town for a few years and as a youth case manager for the past two years. I definitely agree Missoula needs a transitional program for children aging out. I see many children slip through the cracks; However, I see more children who butt against anyone wanting to help them. They can't escape their victim stance. They run from foster homes or group homes and don't trust adults to keep them safe and care for them, since their parents never did. Most of my kids aging out qualify for adult care, but refuse to take advantage of adult services. There are many wonderful mental health services in Missoula and I hope these services are highlighted in this movie.
I'm so glad you did this piece. I took in a 20 year old this past summer who had a similar story. He aged out of the foster care system at 18, he had been homeless, and I was trying to offer him a hand up, but it didn't work out. He wasn't used to family life. It is just so sad to know young adults are invisible and lacking even minor relationship skills needed to get by.
