Re: “WTF

"Hoot Owl" restrictions bear some relevance to the U.S. Forest Service's PR icon
Woodsy Owl, who appeared in the early 1970s. When I fought fire from Missoula in
the same time period, we called the rules "Woodsy Rules".

Re: “Special deliveries

It is great that families have more options and that midwives and doulas are welcomed. Our kids were delivered by family physicians - someone who knew us, knew our family, and cared for our kids 'before, during, and after' delivery. Too bad Providence doesn't offer that option as well ... Any ideas why they haven't?

Re: “Perfect fit

Expect higher taxes, and more regulations. Housing costs in the County will increase, just like the cities. URD III should expire. How much money is giving to the city, that could be used for more livable wages by businesses.

Re: “Meter maintenance

In the end, it's all about the money. Downtown would be a lot more vibrate without meters. We're wasting this money, plus the MRA wants to spend over 6-million dollars for paint strips and lights, making Main and Front Streets two again like they used to be.

And I should go downtown why?

Re: “Badger-Two Medicine

This is Bruce Milhans from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. All persons and organizations interested in submitting their comments may do so via fax, mail, or email. These comments will be given the same consideration as any presented at the actual meeting. Therefore, it is easy as pie for anyone to have their comments considered and there is no need whatsoever to attend the meeting in Choteau to be heard by the panelists considering the historic preservation issues at hand. Basically, for those who feel they need to appear in person, we are providing that opportunity. For those who can't, your submissions have equal weight in our considerations so the site and time selected does not preclude anyone from making comments. For details, please see: Thanks.

Re: “Beer glut

We recently interviewed the head Brewers of the 8 open breweries of the Flathead and surrounding counties as part of our "Brewmasters" series on and every single brewery echoed the same sentiment that they were already brewing to capacity and looking to expand where it was possible. It seems northwest Montana is really set to be the next craft brewing Mecca with it's mix of outdoor culture and very high quality craft breweries. Unlike the bigger cities, bad craft breweries can't survive here. The beer has to be (and is) great. Check out "The Brewmasters" series on We also interviewed two breweries that are close to opening and Montana's first commercial hop growing operation, Glacier Hops Ranch.

Re: “Power play

Barrack Hussein Obama promised he would destroy our coal industry and he has almost achieved it. Yet China says they will build 620 new coal fired electric plants between now and 2030 when they say "they will consider" trying to take steps to achieve cleaner air. Obama and the EPA have done more to destroy the economy in the last 6 years than even I thought possible. All done by bypassing congress and ramming it down our throats.

Re: “Beer glut

Good article Alex. Your readers should know that Dennis Himmelberger and Todd Daniels of the now defunct Kessler Brewery were really the driving force behind the Taproom Compromise of '99. I was more like the water boy doing work in the background and giving them a breather when asked. I still kick myself for agreeing to the 10k bbls limit!

Re: “Beer glut

One recent addition to the brewing industry that was missed is Montana Canning Co, a new mobile canning business based out of Livingston, Mt.

Re: “Shooting up

Perhaps an odd point to make, however, it is quite possible to trace the origin of this rather PURE Heroin, I would (if legal) make a small wager this new onslaught on Heroin IS from..................... Afghanistan. And who would have such a grand connection to Afghanistan Heroin? The United States Govt. Anyone remember Ole' Oliver North and Cocaine and "rock" being introduced. Does anyone remember "Air America", the Contra funding, on and on.
Separate subject. Does anyone know a person with true IP ( )
Certainly medications can be abused. The current media induced opiate madness IS causing horrible suffering for those with a true NEED for medical treatment.

Oh well.

Re: “Shooting up

My son was arrested two days ago for violation of probation. He has been using heroine and I am guessing is an addict. I have no idea how he is or if he has been withdrawing his probation officer told me there is help only if it gets really bad. He also told me he could wait months to get into a treatment program. The lack of compassion is heartbreaking. I wish someone would tell me what I can do to help him

Re: “Outside the box

I could care less if a person is gay, lesbian straight, trans, black, red, white, etc. But I am tired of all of these "special interest groups" whining and moaning all the time about this or that. If they didn't have something to b---h about they wouldn't be happy. The only group left that doesn't whine and moan much about one thing or another is the "straight, white, male, working man". (of which I am not a member)

Re: “Out of the dark

I agree. We need to change the term "dark money" (a loaded racist term according to Mr. Bopp). I encourage Commissioner Motl to substitute the more politically correct term: "Fucking sneaky, deceitful and evil money."

Re: “Old mines die hard

Nobody can deny that modern civilization needs metals; but even more than with almost all other commodities, the pricing of mined materials doesn't reflect the true costs of the product. The profits are privatized and the costs are socialized - the Clark Fork being a prime example, albeit an extreme one.

$8,000? No thanks - I've funded the MUS's retirement system enough.

Re: “Shooting up

Thank you, Ms. Whittle, for this great article. For the first time in my life, I have just been touched by the heroin overdose problem. A young friend of mine just died from it. More articles! More education! Thanks again.
