About Us

As Montana's largest weekly newspaper, the Missoula Independent provides a popular antidote to the more conventional local media. Published on Thursdays and distributed free at more than 600 locations across western Montana, the Independent has a weekly distribution of 22,000 and reaches a broad cross-section of readers. Nearly two-thirds of all the adults in Missoula read the Independent, and thousands more read it throughout the region, from Hamilton to Whitefish.

The Independent offers a rich, in-depth perspective on our unique life here in the "Last Best Place." Our readers count on the Independent to give them insight into the forces affecting their cultural landscape, to help them understand the true nature of their community, and to help them guide its future, as well as their own. From performing arts at the University of Montana, to labor disputes at the local lumber mills, the Independent covers western Montana in all its variety. And we do it with style. The Independent has been honored with countless editorial awards, including prestigious national first-place prizes in 1998, 2000, 2006 and 2010 from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.
