Is anyone else weary of the "everyman" depiction of David Strohmaier? I don't give a good gosh darn, Ms. Mayrer (or Ms. Szpaller of the Missoulian) what this man drinks; what is important is what he thinks. Essentially he thinks a lot of everyone and wants everyone happy, married if they want to be, shopping local and embracing ordinances that make stewardship something near the heart. I happen to agree. But does our man-on-the-bike-trail think deeply? Analyze critically and in detail before voting? Sadly no, methinks. He is a hand-in-pocket voter with the imperious Mayor and entertained absolutely no specific use for the redevelopment money other than the bailout of the seven baseball investors and the behind-the-scenes MFCU. Here's a toast to a man everyone likes to like...but few felt suited to legislative representation.
Meanwhile, the Independent eschewed coverage on the felling of hundreds of Norway Maple trees in Missoula, choosing instead to quote the very agency clear-cutting those trees rather than seek-out those who fear the depletion of the green-canopy that produces the oxygen we enjoy. Oh, but wait....they do cover councilman Jaffre's plan to replace trees. So, let's see: That's like covering the attempts to find homes for Iraq War orphans but never addressing the war itself. Safe. Secure. No one in City Hall or in an advertising capacity is offended. Go figure; then follow the money.
As the Swan View Coalition pointed out elsewhere, the Forest Service in Oregon seems to have no problem collecting western larch cones through the use of a crane to easily and safely pick larch cones, while letting the big, old larch trees live to see another day…or another century or two. Heck, the Forest Service even has a nice little slideshow showing larch cone collection on Oregon’s Ochoco National Forest. One has to wonder why the Flathead National Forest can't use this same method.

A year ago Donna Gaukler--Director of Parks and Recreation--was unable to identify a Norway Maple tree (even though she had authorized the conservation lands manager for the city to cut as many of them as he deemed necessary.) She also could not write a paragraph on the connection of fast-growing trees, photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and oxygen for Missoula's citizens. That she would in this piece cite statistics and monetary needs for the reforestation of Missoula is absurd and, to one who challenged her to grow beyond press releases and hockey affiliations, personally insulting. Would that Mr. Jaffe and the Independent could have attended (as the former was invited to do) a Parks and Recreation meeting wherein a pro-individual notification policy re: tree removals was absolutely gutted by an angry and embarrassed (read "unprepared) lawyer on the board. Ms. Gaukler sat, chin to chest. Conservation Lands Manager (who, ironically wrote the proposed plan) sat...chin on chest. Reporter Jessica Mayrer was given this information over a year ago and merely, as she does again here, returns to her computer and splices city-employee quotes with filler. All should be embarrassed.
Addressing one of Missoula's main issues "Rape capital of the USA!" This is a great starting point. Until all involved for their part in this cover up are dismissed and replaced at the UM and City of Missouila this matter and the after effects being felt will not subside and go away. Public, it's your choice, waller in the slop or wake up and walk upon the green grasses. Missoula was poised to be a tourist hot spot this year or until...and these men have only made the situation worse. If these men truly loved this community and the people within the community they would proceed with stepping down from a job not well done at all and let the UM and community of Missoula heal from this embarrassing moment in history. Their departure will also be a win win situation for the local economy...and show the rest of the Nation Missoula truly does care.
Well certainly...you got your little piece and don't want anybody else to have one....
I have two ride/pack mules and two ATVs... I'll go wherever I well please using whichever I need
People need to pull their heads out of their a's and realize that the Government will spend our tax dollars how THEY want! Your opinion does not matter! You were not asked before this was done. At least we get to pay a bunch of grizzly loving hippies money to spend more time in the woods Yippy!
The project yes may be costly but maybe people should actually look into the funding because there is private funding as well. The information gathered will be helpful/beneficial.
Hey, glad to see the last of you! Montana was not founded on people who live life stoned. What a cause to give your "money and freedom" to.
This information is costly to gather but will affect future management decisions in the area - which could have a positive effect on the economy in the long run. Also my sister is working this project and she's cool, so chill, y'all. :)
More tax dollars going to waste
Such a shame to lose a great advocate for a cause many have given their money and freedom for. John we wish you the best in Washington!
As I understand this project is costing $1.7 million dollars during an economic depression of Tax monies. You need to explain "completely" to the public how this cost is, or will be, affecting local Agencies or not !!
John, a hearty thanks for all you have done, and knowing you, will continue to do. Best of luck in your future en devours.
No reason this market can't be successful. People really seem to be supporting the Missoula markets. Good luck Milltown, and great location.
Hard to beat a good single malt when it comes to scotch. Wish I could afford it once in awhile.
AGAIN IT'S ALL ABOUT CORRUPTION AND MONEY! From the Daily Interlake YESTERDAY: “For whitetail deer, it’s the best we’ve had for six years,” said Jim Williams, regional wildlife manager. “Actually, it’s the second highest in the last 10 years.”
That is a welcome turnaround after recent years of surveys showing low fawn “recruitment.” The fawns that make it through the winter with pressure from predators are better equipped to survive into the fall hunting season as 1 1/2-year-olds.
“We anticipate a jump in the number of yearling bucks that are available” this fall, Williams said.
Mule deer surveys across the region came in with an average of about 32 yearlings per 100 adults, a ratio that is “fairly stable to slightly increasing” compared to recent years, Williams said.
Elk surveys also have shown stronger recruitment trends.
So what's gonna be the NEXT EXCUSE!!
Sandra Flukes entire argument made me laugh, she wants her health insurance to pay for her contraception. Let's think about this for a minute. The reason sex exists is for women to become pregnant. If you are practicing birth control then you are not having sex for the reason it exists, so why are you having sex? For the pleasure and entertainment value. By her logic, my health insurance company should be paying for my concert tickets and cable TV, because that's what I do for entertainment. I have no problem with people having as much sex as they want as long as they are all consenting partners, but be willing to take responsibility for your actions. Nobody has to have sex, you can always practice self control, but if you are unwilling or unable to, pay for your own damn birth control!
A "white supremacist"???? LOL! NO WAY is Gary Marbut a racist. NO WAY. You, CCopeland, are either ignorant beyond belief, or you're a total liar. Pick one.
Re: “Montana Democrats back gay marriage”
well certainly the dimwits back gays...wouldn't be a surprise to find out every democrat is gay.
