Re: “Forgotten treasure

Butte's population peak, in 1917, was about 100,000, not 300,000.

Re: “Pissed Jeans

The opening question took the prize for the most inane words committed to this paper, until the "What's good here" sidebar. No, dude, maybe I'm not rawk enough for your high-minded lowbrow sensibilities but I don't remember, because your cute little profound experience with 'white drugs' is yours alone.

Maybe white drugs and early mornings of hand rolling your exquisite pretzel bread aren't a good mix.

Re: “Todd Snider

If you haven't seen Snider live, he is definitely worthy. He's a truth-speakin' man and there aren't that many of them left. Saw him here in Phoenix and would again there in MT, but won't be over 'till June. Have a great time. I know you will!

Re: “Path less taken

Would it kill you to say Thank You?

This is how this article reads if you reverse the genders.
“Hi, I am a man, I need to compare my self worth to women. and I am going to the kitchen to cook food. This is a field that women have dominated. Man, the food I cooked for my own selfish purposes is delicious; I guess women aren’t special after all.”
This Of Course Is ridiculous and offensive. When my girl cooks for me, I say, “Thank you. I appreciate the effort you put in.” and most of the women I know appreciate the things that men do for them. Why does the Independent always paint women as ingrates that derive all their self worth from comparing their achievements to that of men?
I learned three things form this article:
1. If women want to work in a hard field she is welcome to, and no MAN tries to stop her.
2. Male dominated fields are the hard, dangerous jobs that most people don't want to do.
3. Men receive neither Recognition or Appreciation for their hard work and contribution.

They could have slanted this article with: Men have traditionally taken on this thankless toil for centuries. Thank you guys for your hard work. But the independent never does this.

Re: “Path less taken

so Thoreau is a fraud, and Byl is a hero? every other writer should feel shame, even you Kate Whittle? once again instead of women being proud of their own achievements, they have to loop it back to "men are oppressive, kick them in the balls."? and "see? i'm better than men for doing the same job." and how is it that all the men that did this same dangerous, hard job are frauds, but one woman does it, and she is a hero? i guess Jamie Rogers is right, men are never discriminated against. and Skyler Browning is right too, the Independent never prints slanted articles with an agenda to program you to think a certain way.

Re: “Welcome in

Hello, Josh! Thanks so much for your thorough job of reviewing the play. You obviously watched and listened and your hard work is much appreciated. I think everyone can learn from your comments about where the play was weak and can be happy about where we had our good moments. Again, thanks for your attention! ~ Leslie Stoll O'Neill

"This is the day Jesus came back to life, so the bar scene is pretty dead." - Molly Laich

I've never thought of this before, but wouldn't the good Lord expect us to eat drink and be merry?

I say the following with utter sincerity: WTF?

Also, I love me some M. Laich sentences.

Re: “Post-racial myths

I'm a white American and I love hip hop music. Some people seem to think being white and loving hip hop is an odd dilemma, resulting in strange articles like this one.

I also love jazz, blues, classical Chinese poetry, Mexican muralists and Dutch impressionism. Nobody has ever suggested to me that my skin color, race or nationality present a dilemma when it comes to these artistic preferences. What gives?

I'll probably eat Chinese food tonight too. Weird huh?

Re: “Post-racial myths

Thanks for pointing that out, John, because now that I read the article again it's totally misleading. "Daylight" and "Uncle Sam" are from Undisputed Truth, not from Mourning in America as their paragraph placement implies. Three cheers for smart readers.

Re: “Spinning legends

The error was inserted in the editing process and not by the author. We've corrected it. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: “Post-racial myths

None of the song quotes in this article came from his latest album "Mourning in America..." but 'The Undisputed Truth', which was released in 2007.

Re: “Anti-fame

Shmed- First, congratulations to you and your family for "making it" in a very competitive business. I am no musician and I do not clam to be one. With the research that I have compiled it is obvious that your have earned your success.

I do have an issue with you claiming to be Denis's "best friend". I knew Denis well. I worked with Denis every day for 2 years up until he died. He worked around children and loved them. He coached a girls basketball team won a championship, something he was very proud of. He shared his music with the students at the school and saw the "other side of life". The same one you seem to be enjoying with your wife and children.

Did you know any of this?

The day Denis died I knocked on his sister's door and watched her screaming in the horror that comes with suicide. To this day we still share a friendship that started with her brother Denis. Each person is different and I will not pass judgement on you in the same way that you seem to have on Denis and his family.

Denis died 10 years ago. He was talented, just like you. He was human and had issues, just like all of us. Please don't use your success as a forum to make judgements on people that you claim to know. In the two years that I worked with Denis I never met you. I was at his funeral (you may have been there, maybe not). I've visited his grave. I cry when I hear his music.

I believe that you did not mean to spark the emotions that you did but there are people that loved Denis and are still on this earth that take offense to some of that comments that you have made. A simple apology would go a long way.

Re: “Observation deck

There is an error in the first description. "amputee" is not a proper, nor flattering word in Michael's case. Amputee is a description of one who had a particular appendage but it or they were "amputated" due to need. Since he was born that way, he never had any legs nor malady to give reason for amputation. Although there are cases of voluntary amputations when not totally medically necessary, due to comfort or logistical reasons. It is normally a medical necessity due to loss of perfusion in tissue risking a major infection. It is obvious Michael has never had such an incident.
