Its always worth a day trip to the Missions.
One of the highlights of any ski tourers ski seasons in Western Montana is a trip to MacDonald Peak. With multiple aspects to ski, a commanding view over the Mission Valley, and an accessible peak just under 10,000', its well worth the effort it takes to climb and ski it. First off deciding the approach is important and there are a number of ways to the area: Post Creek accesses the north face directly, Sheepshead Mountain accesses the big western ridge and Ashley Creek accesses the south face, and lastly Mission Creek provides an alternate approach to Ashley Creek. The standard approach may be via Ashley Creek and the lakes basin. Our trip there ended at the pass between Ashley Creek and the far headwaters of Post Creek above Icefloe Lake. With sustained winds, the final approach to the summit was guarded by the gusts and we skied back into Ashley Creek and took and short detour to the pass to Mission Creek for some great views south to the Sonielem Ridge and the north side of St Mary's Peaks.
