For a low snow year the surface conditions this past week have been ideal at Downing Mountain.

With a quantity of fresh cold snow and wind depositing delighting the skier, north slopes had been moderately crossloaded with a foot of fresh while east faces were delightfully only loaded pillows. Rocks still frequent the lines leaving high speed jump contrails a possibility. We soaked up the sun in the early January fall day and wore light clothes. Low elevation snowpack has still to materialize in any significant quantity, but the lower gully holds snow nicely and we skied out to the Cliffside and hiked back to the ridge before descending to the north and the lodge.
