First Day Skiing at Downing Mountain Lodge

With snow slamming the mountains all Thursday and Friday last week, the powder drifted in deeply throughout Western Montana.

We took advantage of the storm and headed up to spend the weekend at Downing Mountain Lodge. It was a fun weekend with skiing, sledding, board games, hot tubbing and cooking good food.

Deep Powder

The new burnt trees are great skiing and with four feet of snow above 7,000' the deep powder skiing was excellent. Stability had improved since Friday with no collapsing, whumpfing or cracking of the snow on steeper test slopes. There are some crusts at mid to lower elevations to watch for at rollovers below 7,500'.

With at least a thousand acres of new burnt ski terrain directly adjacent to the lodge, it's looking to be an incredible year of trying new lines!
