It took a good long while to pull the trigger on skiing this line this year. We had to wait for decent stability and it came in the form of midwinter corn snow.
Ben and I left town fairly early on this blue sky day and skinned up to the Downing Mountain Lodge, thence passed bowl after bowl of north facing powder to ski this objective. It took some negotiating to make it through the rocky gendarme ridge at the end but soon enough we were standing on top of Downing Mountain looking down this perfect 3,500'+ fall line run into Sawtooth Canyon. It skied splendidly and will be a welcome memory when the snow melts and summer comes. Skiing through the crux at the bottom required removing skis for only a short descent hike to the right and then we whisked on down the well maintained trail to walk out the finale to the Sawtooth Canyon Trailhead. A quick car shuttle had us back at the parking lot to Downing Mountain Lodge where Ben was staying as a guest with some friends, haha!
