USFS seeks public comment on watershed protection plan in Montana
Helena city officials are working with private landowners in the Rimini area to remove fuels on their land in the Montana capital city's watershed, but with most of the land in that watershed within the boundaries of the Helena National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service is now proposing a fuels-reduction project to protect the steep, rugged terrain from a wildfire that could affect the drinking water resource for the city's 30,000 residents.

USDA, Interior secretaries roll out watershed protection plan in Colorado
On Friday, U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the Colorado-Big Thompson partnership, a cooperative effort between the Northern Water Conservancy District, Colorado State Forest Service, United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Western Area Power Administration to combine efforts to protect that Colorado watershed, with plans for pilot projects in six more states.

Study: Colorado ranks third in U.S. for homes built in high-risk areas
Wildfires have destroyed 2,000 structures in Colorado since 2002, and across the state, more counties are urging homeowners in the wildland-urban interface to shoulder more of the responsibility for protecting their homes by building those homes using fire resistant materials, installing sprinkler systems and cisterns, and removing fuels from around their homes.

Wyoming among 12 states to sue EPA over 'sue and settle' policy
On Tuesday, Republican attorneys general from 12 states, including Wyoming, will file a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its practice of settling lawsuits filed that impose stronger regulations without allowing states input on those rules.

BLM to conduct 16 summer wild-horse roundups, 9 in Nevada
The Bureau of Land Management released its schedule of summer wild-horse roundups, with the goal of removing 1,300 wild horses and burros from western states by Sept. 30.

Parks Canada study seeks to reduce grizzly bear deaths in Alberta parks
Since 2000, 23 grizzly bears have died from being hit by trains or vehicles in or near Alberta's national parks or along the TransCanada Highway, and in 2011, Parks Canada using funds from the Canadian Pacific Railway launched a four-year study to find ways to protect grizzly bears from trains and vehicles.

Wyoming city's effort to bring gun manufacturer to town littered with failures
The city of Glenrock used $1.5 million from the Wyoming Business Council to build a gun manufacturing business in the Wyoming town five years ago, and since then three such businesses have set up and failed in the building, a fate the Broadsword Group, a limited liability company that now owns all three of its predecessors, hopes to avoid.
