Last weekend marked the third annual Seeley Lake Pond Hockey Tournament, a post-New Years tourism bump for the tiny Montana town organized by local hockey-buddy duo Mike Lindemer and Tom Monaghan. The event, which went down Jan. 2-4 on the ice behind Lindey's Steakhouse, drew some 150 players and dozens of spectators. There was a lot of shouting, a little beer drinking and more than a few bruises.
What started with 11 teams in 2011 has blossomed into a three-rink, 30-team affair complete with upper and lower divisions. The event proved so popular this year that Lindemer had to turn away 20 additional teams. Players traveled from across Montana, eastern Oregon, Canada, even Georgia. This year, Lindemer and Monaghan are donating the weekend's proceeds to Seeley Lake Elementary and the Missoula Area Youth Hockey league.
“The only feedback we’ve received this year is to try and have another rink for kids to play on, which we were able to do last year,” Monaghan told the Indy Saturday afternoon. “But where we’re standing now was mush a week ago, so it wasn’t an option.”
In addition to the Indy's coverage (see this Thursday's issue for one player's story, as well as an adorable Viewfinder), Indy photo intern Eric Oravsky was on hand to shoot photos. Check out this slideshow for his choicest shots.
