Offshore drilling fees help USFS buy land in 15 states
Revenue from federal offshore drilling permits flows into the Land and and Water Conservation Fund, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary announced that $41.5 million of that fund was used in 15 states to buy 28 parcels of land covering a total of 20,000 acres.

The Associated Press compiled a list of lands purchased by Land and Water Conservation funding, including parcels in Colorado's Arapaho and Uncompahgre national forests; in Idaho's Salmon-Challis, Sawtooth and Clearwater national forests; in the Lolo, Flathead and Lewis and Clark national forests in Montana; and in Utah's Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

NRDC report ranks Utah, Montana worst in West in water planning
The Natural Resources Defense Council "Ready or Not" report released Thursday ranks states on how well they're planning for changes in water resources brought by a changing climate, and Utah and Montana were ranked in the lowest tier due to little or no planning, while the remainder of the Rocky Mountain West states were ranked just a tier higher with some planning, except for Colorado, where state agencies have begun some work.

Million's RFP for Wyoming-Colorado water pipeline touts $1.4B in profits
Contained within Colorado businessman Aaron Million's request for proposals from contractors to build a pipeline to carry water from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir on the Wyoming-Utah border to cities on Colorado's Front Range is an estimate that the entity that handles the project from design through construction to bringing it online would see profits of $1.4 billion.

BLM to approve Anadarko's proposed drilling plan in Utah's Uinta Basin
The Bureau of Land Management has opened up the 30-day comment period on its final environmental study of Anadarko's Greater Natural Buttes plan to expand drilling operations in the Uinta Basin that could add thousands of wells to the eastern Utah basin over the next decade.

Geothermal industry's annual report touts Utah as a major player
The Geothermal Energy Association's annual report on geothermal power production and development said that, in 2011 and the first three months of 2012, Utah ranks third in the nine states producing geothermal power, with only California and Nevada producing more megawatts of power from geothermal plants.

Of the 878 addresses in the area of Colorado notified to evacuate as the Lower North Fork wildfire raged nearer, 278 were entered into the database of the emergency notification system wrong, including the house where Ann Appel died in the wildfire.

Low natural gas prices torpedo MacKenzie pipeline project in Canada
Imperial, ConocoPhillips Canada, Shell Canada, ExxonMobil and the Aboriginal Pipeline Group have been working on a plan to build the MacKenzie Valley pipeline to carry Canadian Arctic natural gas south through Alberta to U.S. markets for a decade, but with large volumes of shale gas pulling down prices, those partners are backing away from the $16.2-billion project.

At its investor presentation in Houston this week, Oklahoma-based Devon Energy Corp. released its plans for conventional oil and gas development in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and released production reports for its Alberta oilsands operations.
